PORTLAND – Maine ranked 33rd in the nation for average teacher salaries in an annual survey released Thursday.
The average teacher in Maine made $40,935 for the 2004-2005 school year, up 2.7 percent from the year before, according to the American Federation of Teachers. The average teacher salary nationally was $47,602.
Connecticut had the highest teacher salaries in the survey, while South Dakota had the lowest.
Among northern New England states, Vermont ranked 21st and New Hampshire 23rd.
For beginning teacher salary, Maine ranked 44th in the nation at $26,643, according to the survey.
