Town meetings

Sangerville

To light or not to light the four-way intersection will be a question answered by residents at the annual town meeting Saturday.

Some residents petitioned the town and the state Department of Transportation last year to improve safety at the intersection of Route 23, Pleasant Avenue and Douty Hill.

Route 23 and Pleasant Avenue are state roads, and Douty Hill Road is a state-aid road maintained by the state in the summer and by the town during the winter months.

After much discussion, the DOT installed blinking yellow lights on Route 23 and red lights last year on the two side roads.

About seven months after the lights were installed, a log on a pulp truck caught a wire and destroyed the lights and broke the supporting poles.

At the 9 a.m. town meeting in the fire station, residents will decide whether to have the lights reinstalled.

Residents also will decide whether they want to keep the former Abbie Fowler School as a rental business or sell it.

The total municipal appropriations of $749,426 are up about $114,000. That increase is driven in part by the proposed purchase of an $82,000 public works truck, $100,000 for improvements to the Goff Road, $2,000 for the repair of the Knowlton’s Mills Cemetery, and $7,500 for the repair and resurfacing of the basketball court.

Those funding articles are among the 59 warrant articles that will need voter action.

Funds for the repair of Cross Road and improvements to the town’s playground will be among the articles residents will act on at the annual town meeting.

The town meeting will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the fire station.

Selectmen and the budget committee have recommended raising $3,000 for the Cross Road and $1,000 to bring the playground up to code.

Residents also will act on a $2,000 request to serve as seed money for a grant to build a small stone gazebo at the recreation center.

There are some differences of opinion between selectmen and the budget committee on funding for some of the 42 articles, including town salaries. Selectmen have recommended $15,000 for the salaries while the budget committee has recommended $17,020.

Selectmen have requested $27,000 for summer roads while the budget committee has recommended $24,500.

A request for $4,200 for assessing and tax maps also will need voter attention.
