Children’s charities and programs supported by the Kiwanis Club of Brewer will benefit from your talent, and you can benefit from a winning performance, if you enter the club’s first “So You Think You Have Talent” Show.
The event is planned for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Brewer High School, and is open to everyone.
The entry deadline is Sunday, April 15, and the entrance fee is $5.
Contest applications are available in Brewer at Mark’s Music, Awards Signage and Trophies and Brewer Public Library; at all Gold Star Cleaners locations; Bangor Cleaners and Penobscot Theatre Company in Bangor; and by calling club President Kathleen Harding-Heber at 825-4477.
Your application and entrance fee should be mailed to Brewer Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 538, Brewer 04412.
Club secretary Herb Hopkins told me that, for its first fundraiser of this type, club members are “hoping for a good turnout,” and that “ticket information [for the show] will be available at a later date.”
In the meantime, if you’re considering becoming a contestant, this is what you need to know.
A $500 cash prize will be awarded to the winner in the up-to-age 10 children’s category; $500 to the winner of the 11-18 category; and $500 to the winner of the 19-and-older category.
The grand prize winner receives $1,000.
Auditions are planned for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 22, at Brewer High School and, if needed, the same time and location on Sunday, April 29.
After the auditions, chosen contestants will be contacted by a Brewer Kiwanis Club member with further details.
Remember, you must preregister for this event because no applications will be available at the door the day of the show.
The public is invited to enjoy the music of the Bangor Symphony Youth Orchestra and Symphonic Band at 5 p.m. Sunday, April 1, in Minsky Recital Hall at the University of Maine School of Performing Arts in Orono.
There is no admission fee, but donations will be accepted graciously.
The BSYO string quartet will perform prior to the concert in the lobby, as well as during the concert, and a small wind ensemble will open the concert.
The Symphonic Band is under the direction of Gina Provenzano. Rebecca Edmondson conducts the orchestra.
Joining the BSYO for the performance will be the Penobscot Children’s Choir, directed by Tee Stanislaw and Gerald Wheeler.
Future performers should be aware that auditions for the BSYO are planned for Sept. 9 for the fall session, which runs through November.
The BSYO spring session is January through April. Rehearsals for each are Sunday afternoons at UM.

Pat Hodgkins of the Hancock Woman’s Club encourages women interested in learning about that organization to attend its meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Hancock Community Center on Route 1 in Hancock.
“Our speaker will be Cheryl Wixson,” Hodgkins wrote of the well-known chef who resides in Bangor.

The First Timers, a female illusionist performing troupe, will make its third appearance in a benefit show for the Charles Howard Foundation, which provides college scholarships.
The show is 8 p.m. Friday, April 6, at Bangor Motor Inn, and is followed by a dance, with music of the 1950s through the 1970s, from 9:30 p.m. to midnight.
Tickets are $20 and are available at America Retro, 40 Main St., in Bangor, or at the door.

Debi Florey reports preparations are under way for the Maine-ly Dolls Club Annual Doll Sale and Show 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at the Bangor Elks Club, 108 Odlin Road.
The admission donation is $3 for adults and $1 for children 5-12.
For individuals interested in participating in this event, now is the time to rent your table by calling Florey at 989-9850.
“The Doll Doctor,” Jolene Bowdoin, will be restringing for $1 an inch, and “Grandma” of “Little Red Riding Hood” fame will display dolls from her collection, and read to the kiddies at 1 p.m.
