NEW ORLEANS – The University of Maine committed three errors, one of which opened the door for five unearned runs in the third inning, as the University of New Orleans earned a 10-8 baseball victory Friday night at damp and windy Maestri Field.

The Privateers (17-11) didn’t grab the lead for good until Josh Tarnow and Brandon Bowser hit solo home runs off relief loser Ryan Forrest (0-1) to highlight a three-run uprising and snap a 7-7 deadlock in the seventh inning.

Coach Steve Trimper’s Black Bears, who slipped to 5-13, face New Orleans in single games tonight and Sunday afternoon.

The Privateers reached UMaine pitching for 15 hits. Bowser rapped a double and a single to go with his home run, Nick Schwaner singled three times and scored three runs and Jarrod Ware posted two doubles, including a key two-out, three-run shot in the pivotal third inning.

Curt Smith paced the Bears with two triples, a double and two RBIs. Joel Barrett of Brewer stroked three singles and knocked in two runs.

Brian Hackett of Bangor, who got the start at shortstop, registered two singles, including a two-run hit in the second inning that gave UMaine a 3-0 advantage. Billy Cather hit a solo homer and a single, while Kevin McAvoy of Brewer contributed two singles and an RBI in the Bears’ 14-hit attack.

UMaine jumped on top with a two-out rally in the first inning. Smith laced a triple to left-center on an 0-2 pitch from Ryan O’Shea, then Barrett followed with an RBI single through the left side.

After Bears starter Greg Norton of South Portland escaped a two-out, bases loaded jam by striking out Joey Butler to end the first, UMaine came up with two more runs in the second inning.

Myckie Lugbauer started the rally with a line-drive double down the right-field line. He took third when Bobby Brown reached on a two-base throwing error by the catcher.

Hackett cashed in, lacing a two-run single through the middle to give the Bears a 3-0 lead.

Norton worked his way out of trouble again in the second, striking out Bowser with a runner at third to end the inning. However, he surrendered three hits, issued a walk, was called for a balk and was victimized by a Danny Menendez throwing error on an attempted force play at second base.

UMaine regained the lead on Smith’s two-run triple in the fourth, relinquished it, then came back to make it 7-7 in the sixth on Cather’s home run and an RBI single by Barrett.

Colby, MIT split twinbill

At Phoenix, Colby College came from behind in the second game for a 6-4 victory over MIT and a split of their doubleheader.

MIT held off a second-inning rally by the White Mules in the opener and won 7-6.

In the first game, MIT scored six runs in the first two innings to hang on for the win.

Craig Cooper led the Mules with three hits.

In the second game, Michael Cuqua, Cooper, and John LaMantia each had two hits for Colby.

Dustin Spiller had two doubles and a single and drove in three runs for Saint Joseph’s of Standish. Ben Grant-Roy chipped in with a two-run double, and Luke Enman scored three runs to go along with a double, a triple, and an RBI.

Brandeis sweeps Saint Joseph’s

At Waltham, Mass., Brandeis struck for five homers, including two from Christina McWilliams in the second game, as the Judges swept Saint Joseph’s College 9-0 and 12-2.

In the first game, Kaitlin Streilein, Danielle Mayer and Allie Mussen each hit a home run and combined to drive in six runs.

Megan Farrell led the Monks with two singles.

In the second game, McWilliams finished with six RBIs to lead Brandeis.

Farrell smacked a two-run homer for Saint Joseph’s.

At Waltham, Mass., Beth Gostanian hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Trinity by Bowdoin of Brunswick in the mutual league opener.

Jayme Woogerd scored Bowdoin’s only run on a fielder’s choice and finished with two hits. Bowdoin is now 14-4 and Trinity is 9-1.
