New Orleans takes 2 from UM

NEW ORLEANS, La. – For the third straight game, University of Maine pitchers gave up 10 runs. For the second straight game, the Black Bears lost to the University of New Orleans by a 10-9 score.

Sunday afternoon, it took 10 innings for the Privateers to edge the Black Bears. On Saturday afternoon, UNO nipped the Bears 10-9 in nine innings.

On Sunday, Curt Smith set the UMaine career record for triples with his 14th. He also had a single and a solo home run, but it wouldn’t be enough.

The Privateers scored three runs in the ninth – one on an RBI groundout and the others on Drew Anderson’s one-out, two-run double – to tie the game and then won in the 10th as Brandon Bowser led off with a double and Anderson followed an intentional walk with an RBI single up the middle.

Anderson led the way with a double, two singles and five RBIs for UNO. Josh Tarnow had a solo home run and two singles. Joey Butler had three singles, an RBI and a steal.

Kevin Jackson had a double and two singles for UMaine while Joel Barrett of Brewer added three singles and two RBIs.

On Saturday, Nick Schwaner’s one-out single to right field scored Joey Butler from second in the bottom of the ninth with the winning run.

Butler led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and was bunted to second.

Maine jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but a four-run third put the Privateers right back in it.

Maine was led offensively by Smith, who hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth and two singles for two total RBIs. Kevin McAvoy of Brewer hit a three-run homer in the second and singled for four total RBIs. Matt McGraw had a double, a single and an RBI while Myckie Lugbauer singled twice for the 5-14 Black Bears.

Johnny Giavotella hit a three-run homer and singled for four total RBIs to lead the 18-11 Privateers. Drew Anderson and Joey Butler each had a double, a single, and a stolen base. Tyrone Wethers singled twice. Adam Campbell pitched an inning of relief to earn the win, his second of the season.

Husson splits with UMF

At the Winkin Complex in Bangor Saturday, the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers combined with the Husson Eagles to pound out 35 hits in a doubleheader split.

Husson won the first game 8-6 while the Beavers took the second 5-4.

In the first game, Nick Arthers of Belfast had a double, three RBIs, and a run scored to pace the Eagles. Jeff Miller of Veazie had two singles and two RBIs, Bucksport’s Adam Sheehan had a double and a single, and Dover-Foxcroft’s Danny White had two singles.

Dan Stefanilo had three singles and four RBIs to pace UMF. Phineas Peake of Penobscot had a double, a single and two stolen bases. Peter McLaughlin of Benton had a triple and a single while Corey Provencher singled twice.

In the second game, Tyler Hanson had two singles, a steal, and three RBIs to lead the Beavers to the win.

Provencher doubled and singled for UMF while Brian McGinley of Hermon led Husson with a singles and three RBIS.

At Lewiston, Sean VanderVliet pitched a nine-inning shutout, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out five to lead Bates College past the University of Maine at Farmington on Sunday.

USM sweeps W. Connecticut

At Danbury, Conn., the University of Southern Maine Huskies were outhit in each game against Western Connecticut State Saturday, but still managed to win both – 7-4 and 7-5.

In the second game, Ryan Bourque hit a solo home run, singled, and had two RBIs to pace the Huskies past the WCSU Colonials.

Nick Vardaro and Collin Henry of Penobscot each hit two singles for the Huskies.

In the first game, Max Arsenault had two singles, a double, and three RBIs, and Eddie Skeffington had a three-run home run to lead USM.

Bourque added a double and a single for the Huskies.

At Sidell Stadium, Josh Moore limited the University of Southern Maine’s high-powered offense to three hits through 7 2/3 innings on Sunday, leading Wheaton to victory.

USM’s Collin Henry retired seven straight batters from the third through fifth inning.

Tufts wallops Bates

At Medford, Mass., Derek Rice and Jason Protano each pitched complete games with Rice walking no one in a seven-inning game and Protano allowing one earned run in nine innings.

The Tufts Jumbos won the first game 10-2 and the second 16-2.

Bowdoin sweeps Trinity

At Waltham, Mass., Nick Lawler had four singles – two in each game – to help lead Bowdoin to a doubleheader sweep of Trinity, 6-4 and 5-4.

In the second game, Ryan Turgeon (2-0) pitched six strong innings and Tyler Turgeon went two in relief to notch his second save of the day and help lead the Polar Bears by Trinity.

Marc Dellaire had two singles and three stolen bases for Bowdoin. Chris McCann also singled twice.

In the first game, Jon Koperniak hit a two-run triple for Bowdoin.

St. Joseph?s, Plymouth State split

At Standish, Luke Enman homered and singled to knock in two runs and lift Saint Joseph?s College over Plymouth State College 11-3 in Sunday?s first game. Plymouth State took the second game 9-8.

In the first game, Dustin Spiller hit three singles for the Monks and Wade Oliver doubled and singled.

In the second game, Pogorzelski had a home run and four RBIs for Plymouth State. Ben Grant-Roy homered and singled to drive in two runs for Saint Joseph?s. Andrew Wood and Travis Adams each had a single two RBIs.
