The second annual Ma’nakwane Memorial 5K Run-Walk 2007 begins with registration from 8 to 9:45 a.m. and the run-walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at the Penobscot Nation Community Building on Indian Island.
The entry fee is $15, and proceeds benefit the Lindsey Almenas Scholarship Fund for graduating Old Town High School students.
Almenas, who was killed in an automobile accident in September 2005, would have been a member of this year’s OTHS graduating class. It is expected that $2,000 in scholarships will be awarded to her classmates this spring.
Neeburbunn Almenas is the race coordinator, and she points out that since this fundraiser is a run-walk, the sponsors “encourage all fitness levels to participate.”
The purpose of the scholarship fund is to help “provide high school students with financial support” as they pursue a postsecondary education, she said.
If you would like to register for the event in advance, visit www.active.com and click on Individual Sports; under Search Here, enter the Old Town zip code of 04468; then click on Ma’nakwane 5K Run/Walk Road Race.
The event features eight categories for male and female runners and walkers, and more information can be obtained by e-mailing Dee Love at dlove@penobscotnation.org or by calling her at 817-7301.
If you cannot participate, but would like to contribute to the scholarship fund, make out a check payable to Penobscot Nation and mail it to Love at 12 Wabanaki Way, Indian Island, ME 04468.
The public is invited, and refreshments will be served, when the St. Croix Historical Society meets at 7 tonight at The Holmestead on Main Street in Calais.
The guest speaker is Wayne Wilcox of Eastport, who will discuss The Fenians, part of an 1800s Irish movement to obtain independence for Ireland from Great Britain.
And for quilters in that area, the St. Croix International Quilters offer a free workshop at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at the Methodist Homes Recreation Center on Palmer Street in Calais.
The topic is making an origami purse or tote.
At 9 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at the same site, this group will conduct part three of its Mystery Quilt program featuring Shirley Slauenwhite.
There is no charge to attend either event, and more information can be obtained by calling 454-0654.
Laura Gallucci of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra will present Crossover: The Violin and Viola from Historic to Modern Times, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at the Bangor Public Library, 145 Harlow St.
Her presentation will highlight a variety of music that can be played on these instruments ranging from classical to electric, jazz and improvisational works.
The program also will include original music written and-or performed by students of Laura Gallucci String Studio.
This presentation is part of the BSO, the library and Bangor School Department’s Strings Attached program and is free and open to the public.
The sixth annual Baby Fair of new and used items for infants and young children will be held 8:30-11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, at Troy Howard Middle School on Lincolnville Avenue, Route 52, in Belfast.
Admission is free, and refreshments will be for sale with proceeds benefiting the Belfast Public Health Nursing Association’s efforts to assist local families in need.

The entry fee is $15, and proceeds benefit the coalition’s education mission of teaching bike safety to more than 15,000 Maine schoolchildren.
