BREWER – The Brewer school committee gave the school department’s three principals and the assistant principal at the high school new three-year contracts at its meeting Monday.
For Brewer High School interim principal Rebecca Bubar, the move makes her the school’s next principal. She was given a one-year interim contract in July 2006.
Bubar, Washington Street School Principal Janet McIntosh, Capri Street School and State Street School Principal Joan Staffiere, and Brewer High School Assistant Principal Brian Doyle were all given three-year contracts, which expire in June 2010.
“I have a great deal of confidence in their abilities,” Superintendent Daniel Lee said. “They are extremely qualified.”
School board chairman Mark Farley congratulated the administrators, and the people in attendance at the meeting gave them a round of applause.
During public comments at the end of the meeting, Kerry Priest, the school department’s special education director, congratulated Bubar on her new appointment.
“You have the leader at Brewer High School that you’re going to need,” he told the board.
During the meeting the board also:
. Congratulated the Brewer High School hockey team for winning the state championship, and recognized the team along with the coaches, assistant coach, team manager and its trainer. Each team member was presented a plaque and received a handshake from each member of the school board, the superintendent and SAD 63 representative Patricia Sirois.
. Accepted $500 from the Brewer Wal-Mart Supercenter, presented by manager Brad Roseberry, to benefit the high school’s Air Force ROTC program that is scheduled to begin in the fall.
. Heard a presentation by Julie Hackett, director of instruction, about the curriculum, instruction and assessment team, which has spent the last year organizing student data and creating cohesive curricula to help students learn. Part of her presentation included test results that show significant improvement in Maine Educational Assessment math scores under the program for both the fourth and eighth grades.
. Accepted the resignation with deep regret of math teacher Michael Clark, who has taught for 38 years, most of them at Brewer; and French teacher Claudette O’Connell, who has served nearly 30 years.
. Approved transferring handwritten school board minutes from Aug. 6, 1913, to May 31, 1927, to the Brewer Historical Society. “It’s fun to read because things seem to be the same,” Lee said. “The issues of 1913 are the same as today.”
. Endorsed a student dress code. Items such as T-shirts referring to alcohol, other drugs or sexual or illegal acts are items the policy forbids, along with revealing apparel. And it also allows administrators to impose additional restrictions if a student’s dress, in their judgement, disrupts the educational process or poses a threat to health or safety. Those found to be in violation of the rules will be given a warning or may be sent home to change.
