Brewer High School

BREWER – The Brewer High School Project Graduation committee will hold a yard sale 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in the Brewer High School cafeteria. Donations of goods (no clothing) may be dropped off 5:30-7 p.m. Friday, April 6, at the cafeteria. Proceeds benefit the Brewer High School’s Project Graduation. For more information, call 825-8803.

BREWER – Join the students of Jeremy Phelps’ drama-English class as they perform a short play they created about the changes that happen between freshman and senior years of high school. The students created the piece in two weeks with help from playwright Cathy Plourde.

It will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the library at Brewer High School. The school partnered with Acadia Hospital Conversations Program and Maine Alliance for Arts Education Building Community Through the Arts Project. It is funded in part by a gift from New England Health Search.

Teens Who Care Awards

The 2007 Teens Who Care Awards will be presented to seven Maine young people for outstanding community service: Matthew Gould of Bangor, Eric Brooks of Columbia Falls, Joseph Canarie of South Portland, Jarrett Clarke of Springvale, Kelly Davis of West Bath, Chomba Kaluba of Long Island and Brittany Lee of Bath.

The award presentations and ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at the Portland Museum of Art. Lee Nelson and Sharon Rose of WLBZ 2 will serve as hosts. John Fitzsimmons, president of the Maine Community College System, will be keynote speaker.

Matthew Gould has been a devoted Big Brother to his “Little” through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Eastern Maine, as well as a longtime participant in the Bangor area MS Walk.

Eric Brooks has performed numerous and creative community service initiatives through his leadership in the Narraguagus High School chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.

Each will be honored with a short documentary profile which will be televised on Channels 2 and 6 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 21.

John Bapst Memorial High School

BANGOR – Diane Tsukamaki, on behalf of the Siemens Foundation and the College Board, has announced that John Bapst Memorial High School has won the prestigious 2006-2007 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement in Maine. One of 50 high schools nationally to win the award this year, John Bapst will receive a grant to support science and mathematics education at the school.

In her letter to John Bapst, Tsukamaki wrote, “This award recognizes that your high school is one of those leading the nation in AP participation and performance in the math and science disciplines. In a pool of extremely strong applicants from your state, your school’s application exemplifies your exceptional commitment to providing your students opportunities to explore the AP program and your staff’s dedication to ensuring students’ success. We believe high schools like yours represent the best of American education.”

Selection was based on the school’s continued growth and contributions to the AP program, specifically in supporting students’ educational experiences in science, mathematics and technology; helping traditionally under-represented students prepare for college; and encouraging students to excel through the AP program. The school’s assistant head for academics, Ron Schwizer, said, “The school places high expectations on students but also provides a strong support system for them.”

Ma’nakwane Memorial Run-walk

The public is invited to participate in the second annual Ma’nakwane Memorial 5K Run-Walk. The event was created to remember Lindsey Almenas, who died in a car accident in September 2005. Proceeds from the event will be used for scholarships to students graduating from Old Town High School.

In May, $2,000 in scholarships will be awarded to eligible students to signify the year Lindsey would have graduated, 2007. The event was created to recognize her accomplishments and to create a positive environment for the community.

Monetary donations are needed to offset costs of producing the event. Sponsors’ names will be printed on event T-shirts. Suggested levels of giving are gold, $200; silver, $100 and bronze, $50. Old Town High School

OLD TOWN – Skills USA took place March 9 at United Technologies Center in Bangor with 10 schools competing. The participants were chosen on highest test scores in a pre-test, a hands-on test and written tests in their areas of study.

Nine Old Town High students qualified and did very well. Gold medal winners were Ashley Nadeau, basic health care; Andrew Beaulieu, diesel equipment; Samantha Kitchen, floral design; and Samantha Smart, nurse assistant.

Silver medal winner was Nicole Stevenson in floral design. Bronze medal winner was Jon Collins in action skills.

Gold medal winners will go on to the national competition in Kansas City in the summer.

Teacher of the Year

AUGUSTA – Gov. John Baldacci honored 18 teachers nominated for the 2008 Maine Teacher of the Year program in a ceremony on April 4 in the State House Hall of Flags. Nominating committees in school administrative units selected the teachers, representing all grade levels and regions of the state. They also represent all content areas of the Maine Learning Results.

“This is a very special program honoring excellence in teaching and all Maine teachers,” said Susan A. Gendron, Maine’s education commissioner. “After all, teaching is the noblest profession. It needs to be recognized as such.”

Hannaford Supermarkets underwrites the cost of the Maine Teacher of the Year program. The 2008 Maine Teacher of the Year will be the 42nd educator to be named.

Madeline Linscott of Winthrop was the first to be named Maine Teacher of the Year in 1966. Brittany Ray, a high school English teacher at Narraguagus High School in Harrington, is the 2007 Maine Teacher of the Year.

Nominees undergo a selection process of school visits, professional portfolio reviews, oral presentations and interviews. The winner will be named in August.

ITHACA, N.Y. – Alexander Moore was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester at Ithaca College’s School of Humanities and Sciences. He is the son of John and Marsha Moore of Bangor.

Saint Anselm College

GOFFSTOWN, N.H. – Emerald Russell, a senior at Saint Anselm College, led a spring break alternative trip March 2-9 to Boston.

The trip is a student-led program through Campus Ministry which allows students to work with the less fortunate. The program emphasizes Christian service and volunteer work. Twenty-four student leaders and one staff member guided 143 students in community service projects.

Russell is the daughter of Carolyn and Edward Russell of Winterport.
