Your help is needed to ensure that the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Old Town continues to be successful in raising funds and promoting awareness of the fight against cancer in Penobscot County.

Old Town Relay for Life committee member Dan Cashman reports “walkers, cancer survivors, community leaders, team captains and dedicated workers” are all needed to help with this year’s two-day event, which begins at 6 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Old Town High School.

The next ACS Relay for Life meeting for this particular event is 6 p.m. Monday, April 23, at the Bangor Banquet and Conference Center on Hogan Road.

Volunteers from Penobscot County are needed to continue planning for this fundrasier, which is chaired by Carla Bommarito.

Individuals working with Bommarito and her committee will help organize and recruit teams, seek community support, coordinate logistics, obtain refreshments and prizes, plan entertainment and help in a number of other ways.

Volunteers come from all walks of life and include patients, medical support staff, business owners and employees, and representatives of civic and nonprofit organizations.

If you can help, plan to attend the April 23 meeting.

If you would like more information, or to volunteer or register as a team participant, call the ACS at (800) ACS-2345, or visit www.acsevents.org/

I recently received information from an old friend of their family that Urban and Diana Legassie of Hampden are going through a very difficult time, and your good thoughts and contributions to help them through this period would be most appreciated.

Diana Legassie, who is known to many in the Bangor area as “My Gal Friday,” recently was diagnosed with brain cancer and, by the time you read this, will have undergone four surgeries at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

Whether the surgeries are successful in removing all the cancer is unknown, but her friends believe every day she is with them can be considered a “miracle” day.

A benefit fund has been established in their names at Maine Savings Federal Credit Union, and contributions to the Urban and Diana Legassie Fund can be made at any MSFCU branch.

Greek recipes will be featured when Women of the World, sponsored by the Office of International Programs & National Student Exchange at the University of Maine in Orono, meets at noon Monday, April 9, at Church of Universal Fellowship on Main Street in Orono.

WOW is open to American and international women, and more information can be obtained by calling Mireille Le Gal at 581-3423.

Fields Pond Audubon Center director Judy Markowsky will speak about “Gorillas in Uganda” when the Bangor Nature Club meets at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at First Congregational Church of Brewer at 35 Church St.

Guests are welcome to attend.

The public is invited to a community open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Stockton Springs Regional Health Center on Cape Jellison Road in Stockton Springs.

The focus of the event is for community members to meet the staff and tour the newly renovated center, which offers a full range of adult and pediatric primary-care services, patient education and on-site diagnostic testing.

At the open house, complimentary blood pressure checks will be offered, and refreshments will be served.

The center’s regular hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays.

Plans are under way for the fourth annual Comins Hall Variety Show, scheduled for Saturday, April 28, in Eddington.

Susan Dunham Shane is chairwoman of the Eddington Clifton Civic Center fundraiser and is being assisted by Ruth Perry.

Shane wants you to know that the show planners are “hoping to tap the great talent in the surrounding area” to participate in the event, which helps support this community facility.

“The show seeks performers of all types,” Shane wrote of the need for “singers, dancers, musical groups, solo acts, magicians,” and people who want to perform “skits, recitations and puppet stories.”

And you don’t have to be “a local” to participate.

“People have come from Belfast and beyond to perform, so join us, on stage, and share your special talent with the rest of the community,” Shane wrote.

People interested in appearing in this production should call Shane before Monday, April 16, at 843-6441.
