STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The University of Maine softball team fell to 17-19 on the season after dropping three games to America East rival Stony Brook 3-2, 25-0 and 6-1 over the weekend. The series was scheduled to be played in Orono, but due to field conditions was shifted to New York.

In Saturday’s first game, Stony Brook scored two runs in the top of the sixth and held off Maine for the win.

Victoria Kavitsky, Kelsi Fanelli and Molly Kestranek drove in a run apiece for the Seawolves.

Kristi Hawkins paced the Black Bears with two hits and an RBI.

In Saturday’s second game, Stony Brook scored six runs in the first inning and 11 more in the second as the Seawolves blanked Maine.

Marissa Fleury went 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and five RBIs. Ashley Westphal belted a two-run homer and Samantha Posey drove in three runs.

Tara Vilardo notched three hits for Maine.

In Sunday’s game, Kavitsky led Stony Brook with two singles and two RBIs.

Fleury and Posey chipped in an RBI apiece for the Seawolves.

Ashley Waters led Maine with two hits and Melinda Corssino scored the lone run.

Thomas sweeps Wheelock

At Chestnut Hill, Mass., on Saturday, Jana Fetterhoff tossed a two-hit shutout to lead Thomas to a 12-0 win in the second game of a doubleheader over Wheelock. Thomas won the first game 8-0.

In the first game, Kim Denbow went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Brittany Morin had a double and a single with three RBIs.

Stacy Seidner led Wheelock with two hits.

In the second game, Denbow, Charlee Hayes and Dixie Poulin drove in two runs apiece for the Terriers.

Fetterhoff finished with three hits and an RBI for the winners.

Jillian O’Neil and Elise Ordile had a hit each for Wheelock.

Bates splits with Trinity

At Hartford, Conn., Trinity scored 11 runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull away for a 17-4 win in the first game, but Bates had a four-run bottom of the seventh to rally for a 4-3 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Stacy Hills and Jesica Tait combined to go 7-for-12 with seven runs scored and eight RBIs for the Bantams.

Stacia Saniuk belted a three-run homer in the third inning for the Bobcats. Saniuk finished with four RBIs and a run scored.

In the second game, Katie Franklin singled home the tying and winning runs with two outs in the seventh.

Val Beckwith singled home Bates’ first run of the inning and later scored the winning run from second base on Franklin’s single to right field.

Tait led Trinity with three hits and Ariana Mullin and Beth Gostanian tallied two hits and an RBI apiece.

Eastern Connecticut sweeps USM

At Mansfield, Conn., Eastern Connecticut State used a pair of seventh-inning rallies to break open two close games en route to sweeping the University of Southern Maine Huskies 6-2 and 5-1 on Saturday.

In the first game, the Warriors scored three times in the seventh to break open a one-run game . In the first inning, USM’s Ryan Bourque slammed his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center.

In the second game, Ryan Gaffney doubled and Nick Vardaro singled him home in the fifth for USM, but the Warriors responded with four runs in the seventh.

Bowdoin sweeps Colby

At Brunswick, Bowdoin swept a doubleheader from Colby on Saturday 5-2 and 11-1. The Polar Bears improve to 9-7 this season and Colby drops to 2-9.

In the first game, Bowdoin got two hits apiece from Pat Duchette, Joe Berte, and Jon Koperniak.

In the second game, Bowdoin put on an offensive show, led by Reid Auger (2 RBIs) and Nick Lawler (2 runs scored). Ryan Turgeon went six innings for the victory.

Bates drops two

At Hartford, Conn., Matt Sullivan had a double, single and two RBIs to lead Trinity to a 7-2 win over Bates in the first game of their doubleheader Saturday, and Sean Killeen went 3-for-6 with two runs, a homer and six RBIs in a 13-9 second-game victory.

In the first game, Thomas DiBendetto added a solo homer and Kent Graham chipped in with two doubles.

Erik Hood paced Bates with two RBIs and Josh Linscott notched a double and a single.

In the second game, James Wood, Matt Stafford, Graham and Killeen all homered for Trinity. Wood finished with three RBIs.

Denis Hogan had a triple and drove in four runs for Bates.
