Woman trying to retrieve cell phone causes crash on Route 3 in Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH – A driver who dropped her cell phone, then tried to pick it up, apparently caused an accident Saturday that injured herself, her baby son and another driver.

Jennifer A. Wilcox, 20, of Trenton was driving with her 18-month-old son south on Route 3 around 7 p.m. when she approached a traffic light where the road intersects with a Wal-Mart entrance.

A truck driven by Cory D. Brown, 27, of Lamoine had turned out of Wal-Mart headed north when Wilcox went through the light and struck the front of the truck, according to police.

Wilcox told Ellsworth police that she dropped her cell phone and took her eyes off the road while trying to retrieve it.

Police do not expect to file any charges.

Police estimated that Brown’s 1997 Ford Ranger had $6,000 in damage, while Wilcox’s 1990s Ford Thunderbird had $4,500. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Wilcox complained of head and neck pain, and her son split his lip from the impact. They were taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital.

Brown complained of leg pain and also was taken to the hospital.
