Husson earns split with Saint Joseph’s

STANDISH – Andrew Patterson allowed three hits and did not give up a run in six innings as Husson held off Saint Joseph’s for a 4-1 win in the first game of a college baseball doubleheader Wednesday.

The Monks scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away and take a 10-2 decision in the nightcap.

In the first game, Joe Robicheau belted a two-run homer in the top of the sixth to lead the Eagles.

Nick Arthers chipped in with a single and an RBI and Chad Lavway contributed two hits.

Stephan Gorsan scored the lone run for the Monks.

In the second game, Ben Grant-Roy tallied three hits, an RBI and scored twice as Saint Joseph’s thumped Husson.

Luke Enman and Mark Clapp drove in two runs apiece, and Wade Oliver added a single, double, a run scored and an RBI.

Bryan Biggers drove in two runs for the Eagle.s

Southern Maine 10, Salem State 5

At Gorham, Josh Mackey had four hits and drove in three runs to help the University of Southern Maine down Salem State. The game was called after seven and a half innings due to darkness.

Ryan Bourque drove in two runs and Nick Vardaro added a double and a triple.

Ryan Laffin hit a solo homer and finished with three RBIs and two singles for the Vikings.

At Waterville, Matt Pavlis scored the game-tying run on a Bowdoin throwing error and Nick Shauwecker drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to give Thomas then win.

Shauwecker finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Aaron Bouyea finished with a single and two RBIs.

Joey Pace led Bowdoin with an RBI single.

Softball

Maine drops doubleheader

At Boston, Boston University swept the University of Maine 8-1 and 15-5 in a doubleheader that was moved to Boston from Orono due to poor field conditions. The Black Bears dropped to 17-21 and the Terriers ran their record to 23-8.

In the first game, BU scored seven unanswered runs after giving up Maine tied the game 1-1 in the first inning to cruise to the win.

Kristen Calvetti drove in Tara Vilardo on and RBI single for the Black Bear’s lone run.

In the second game, the Terriers raced out to a 6-0 lead, held off a four-run second inning by the Black Bears and reeled off nine-unanswered runs for the win.

Kristie Hawkins smacked an RBI double, Elizabeth Foltz had an RBI single and Vilardo drove in two runs on a double for Maine.

St. Joseph’s, Plymouth State split

At Standish, Saint Joseph’s took the first game 4-2 behind three RBIs from Liddy van der Linden, but dropped the second game 2-1 thanks to a nine-strikeout performance by Plymouth State’s Kat Roland.

In the first game, van der Linden finished with a double and two singles and Megan Farrell notched an RBI single for the Monks.

Danielle Normand tallied two hits and Amanda Parshley added an RBI double for Plymouth State.

In the second game, Leanne Barry had four hits and Shauna Taham recorded an RBI double and a run scored for Plymouth State.

Gabrielle Burolla led the Monks with two hits and a run scored.

Southern Maine, Salem State split

At Gorham, Anita Dixon smacked three hits and drove in two runs to lead the University of Southern Maine to a doubleheader split with Salem State. The Huskies defeated the Vikings 6-3 in the opener, and fell 6-0 in the second.

In the first game, Dixon connected on a triple and two singles. India Lowe and Katie Martell added an RBI single apiece. Kristina Grondin knocked in a run on a double and Magan Blais finished with three hits.

Amanda Scola led the Vikings with two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Katelyn Doherty tossed a five-hit shutout and Scola and Sarah Funk drove in two runs apiece to lead Salem State.

Blaise led Southern Maine with two hits.

U-New England sweeps Thomas

At Biddeford, the University of New England used a three-run fifth inning in the first game and a six-run fifth to sweep Thomas 5-1 and 6-0.

In the first game, Caroline Engwer broke the game open with a two-run double to pace the Nor’Easters. Jess Silvio scattered four hits for the win and Lisa Baillargeon had a single and a double.

Brittany Morin paced the Terriers with two singles and a run scored.

In the second game, Lauren Webb smacked a two-run single and Katie Morin chipped in with three hits and a run scored.

Kim Denbow and Jessica Nassetta tallied two hits apiece for Thomas.
