People who are particularly pleased that Bangor is the host city for the Senior League World Series will want to get their tickets now for the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club Live & Silent Auction and Dinner Social.

That event is 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Bangor Banquet and Conference Center on Hogan Road.

Not only will proceeds from the fundraiser benefit the many local Kiwanis children’s charities this club supports, but 25 percent of the proceeds also will be dedicated to supporting the SLWS when it makes its appearance in August at Shawn T. Mansfield Stadium in Bangor.

Tickets for the event are $23 and include a full buffet dinner with a cash bar.

Among the items up for auction are an autographed University of Maine ice hockey jersey from the team that made it to this year’s Frozen Four, 100 gallons of heating fuel, dozens of gift certificates, and many handcrafted items.

For information or to purchase tickets, call Carissa Marsh or Doug Damon at 942-6310.

And, for those individuals who are interested in Kiwanis and its activities, club members want you to know that their organization meets from 7 to 8 a.m. Thursdays at Geaghan’s Roundhouse Restaurant at the Best Inn on Main Street in Bangor.

Guests and prospective members are always welcome and encouraged to attend. Information about the Bangor Breakfast Kiwanis Club can be obtained by calling membership committee chairman Bill Esty at 942-6310.

Bill Robertson called with a correction to his invitation that appeared in Wednesday’s column “for anybody 55 and older” to attend the Seacoast Senior Citizens meetings the second Friday (not Saturday) of each month.

Seacoast Senior Citizens invite you to bring a dish to share (utensils and beverages will be provided) and join them for a potluck luncheon and program at noon Friday, April 13, at Gouldsboro Methodist Church, which is located “on the old Route 1,” Robertson said.

If you have questions about this group that meets April through December, call Robertson at 565-2901.

After our very first conversation 10 years ago, I wrote that “one of the nicest aspects of speaking with [then] 86-year-old Viola Sargent of Ellsworth is finding yourself immediately immersed in a fun-filled history lesson.”

I am very grateful for the many “history lessons” she shared with me over the years, and was pleased to have heard from her on a regular basis about events and activities near and dear to her heart, ranging from her church fair to her work with the Civil Air Patrol.

That is why I was saddened last January to read of her death at age 96.

This week, I received a brief note from members of her family requesting that I inform you that a memorial service for Viola Sargent is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at First Congregational Church of Ellsworth, with the Rev. Ross Wyman officiating.

The last time I heard from Viola, in August, it was to tell me about the church’s 130th summer fair, which is just one of her many lasting legacies.

Meals for ME is a program of Bangor-based Eastern Agency on Aging, which serves 195,000 meals every year to people ages 60 and older residing in Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock and Washington counties.

Meals are available either through the home-delivery program or in dining rooms throughout the counties.

Meals are delivered to those who are housebound, frail or ill, or might be unable to cook for themselves. Those who visit the dining rooms often find companionship in addition to a hearty, nutritious meal.

This year, Meals for ME has accepted the Feinstein Foundation Challenge of matching donations.

Now through April 30, Rhode Island philanthropist Alan Shawn Feinstein is offering $1 million to nonprofit nutrition programs throughout the country, with those funds being divided among all participating agencies.

If you wish to help EAA raise funds through the Feinstein challenge, you can send donations to Meals for ME, 450 Essex St., Bangor 04401.

Checks should be made payable to Meals for ME Challenge, and be dated now through Monday, April 30, to be eligible for the matching program.

All donations must be received by EAA no later than Tuesday, May 1, to qualify for the matching program.

For information about helping Meals for ME raise funds through this matching opportunity, call Gail Ward at 941-2865.
