A 71-year-old Bangor woman was alone in her house on Wednesday when a man broke in through the living room window, according to a police report.

The woman’s husband had gone out and she was sitting at the kitchen table paying the bills when she heard a banging from the rear of the house. When she got up to investigate she saw William Fay, 34, of Bangor pushing on the living room window.

The woman went to another part of the house to call police.

When police arrived, they found Fay in the garage holding a large green duffel bag. He repeatedly yelled, “I did not break into the house,” as he was being arrested, according to the report.

But police say they found on the floor in the living room a backpack with “FAY” written on it in marker. They also found a window open with the latch broken and the screen cut.

Fay, who was on federal probation, was charged with burglary and transported to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained Wednesday night, unable to post bail of $5,000. (Emma Potvin, BDN)
