WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -Kristie Hawkins and Kristen Calvetti hit solo home runs to lead the University of Maine to the 2-1 victory over the University of Hartford in the first game of their America East doubleheader on Saturday.

Hartford took the second game 5-4.

Sunday’s game was cancelled due to inclement weather.

In the first game, Jenna Balent allowed one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six for the Black Bears.

Ann Kyzer doubled for Hartford.

In the second game, Kristie Rochette and Nikki Thompson both doubled to knock in a run for Hartford.

Erin Iandoli hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning for the Black Bears and Ashley Waters doubled and singled.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps MMA

At Castine, Gabrielle Burrola pitched a one-hit shutout and recorded 13 strikeouts to lead Saint Joseph’s College of Standish to the 8-0 win over Maine Maritime Academy in the first game on Saturday. The Monks also won the second game 4-3.

In the first game, Megan Farrell had three hits with three RBIs for Saint Joseph’s and Alysn Ludwig collected three hits.

Katie Quimby singled for the Mariners.

In the second game, Anna Willis, Ludwig and Burrola each had two hits for the Monks.

Kristen Gaylord and Megan McKay both had a hit for Maine Maritime.

At Standish, Gabrielle Burrola pitched seven shutout innings while allowing seven hits and one walk and striking out seven to lead Saint Joseph’s College past the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Sunday.

Burrola doubled and singled to drive in two runs for the Monks. Aly Ludwig singled twice and scored twice and Liddy van der Linden had two singles.

Erica Davis doubled and singled for the Owls.

Southern Maine sweeps

At North Dartmouth, Mass., junior Kristina Grondin pitched a five inning no-hitter to lead the University of Southern Maine past the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth 11-0 in Saturday’s second game. The Huskies also took the first game 5-3.

In the first game, Magan Blais homered and singled to knock in three runs for Southern Maine. Sabrina Sevigny had three singles and two RBIs.

Kayla Peixoto knocked in two runs for UMass Dartmouth.

In the second game, India Lowe doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Huskies and Blais added two singles and three RBIs.

UNE shuts out Eastern Nazarene

At Biddeford, Jess Silvio and Sarah Hamel both pitched shutouts as the University of New England defeated Eastern Nazarene College 3-0 in the first game on Saturday and 8-0 in the second game.

In the first game, Silvio allowed four hits and didn’t walk anybody while striking out eight for the Nor’easters. Kelly Bedard doubled to drive in a run and Lauren Webb singled with an RBI.

Brittany Bedillion singled twice for Eastern Nazarene.

In the second game, Hamel pitched five shutout innings while allowing two hits and no walks and striking out three. Lisa Baillargeon had two singles and two runs scored and Michaela O’Rourke added two singles.

Tufts sweeps Bowdoin

At Medford, Mass., Casey Sullivan homered and tripled to drive in five runs and lead Tufts University to the 12-2 win in Saturday’s second game over Bowdoin College. The Jumbos shutout the Polar Bears 8-0 in the first game.

In the first game, Stefanie Tong pitched five shutout innings while allowing two hits and two walks and striking out three.

Laren Coven doubled for Bowdoin.

In the second game, Maya Ripecky singled twice and scored twice for Tufts.

Shavone Lord hit two singles and scored a run for Bowdoin and Clare Ronan singled twice.

Colby loses three to Trinity

At Hartford, Beth Gostanian went 6-for-7 with two homers, five runs, and seven RBI to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a tripleheader sweep over Colby College.

Trinity took the first two games by 9-0 scores and won the third 13-2, and all three games were ended early due to an eight-run mercy rule. Trinity improves to 17-3 overall and 7-1 in the NESCAC East.

Colby drops to 8-5 overall and 0-3 in the division. Mikki Starr was 4-for-7 with three doubles over three games for Colby.

Saint Joseph’s wins four

At Standish, Keil Martin collected eight hits in 11 at bats over the weekend as St. Joseph’s swept the University of Maine-Farmington 9-1, 7-2 on Sunday after taking a pair from Thomas College on Saturday, 7-5 and 14-4.

Martin had a homer and two singles and scored four runs in Saint Joseph College’s 9-1 win over UMF.

In Sunday’s first game, Ben Cutter allowed just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out six for Saint Joseph’s. Spiller doubled and singled to drive in three runs.

Corey Provencher singled and scored a run for UM-Farmington.

In Sunday’s second game, Travis Adams had a double and two singles with two runs driven in for the Monks and Enman tripled and singled.

Provencher singled and knocked in a run for the Beavers.

In Saturday’s first game, Chris Doughty homered for the Monks and Wade Oliver and Dustin Spiller both doubled and singled.

Michael Chamard and Jared Fieldsend each singled three times for Thomas.

In Saturday’s second game, Mark Clapp had two doubles and three RBIs for Saint Joseph’s and Luke Enman drove in four runs with a triple and a single.

Chamard doubled and singled for Thomas and Nick Shauwecker singled twice.

At Providence, R.I., Penobscot freshman lefty Collin Henry tossed eight innings opf nine-hit, one-run ball in the nightcap and the University of Southern Maine used seven-run rallies in each game to sweep Rhode Island College.

In the second game, Henry struck out three and walked two before Tim Therrian finished up.

Jeff Skillin’s two-run single and RBI singles by Ryan Bourque and Max Arsenault keyed a seven-run fifth inning. Three Rhode Island College errors made all seven runs unearned.

Josh Mackey homered and doubled and drove in two runs and Skillin had an RBI double to go with his two-run single. Bourque had two hits, also.

Tim Henault had three hits for RIC and B.J. Doyon had two.

In the opener, Chris Burleson fired a seven-hit complete game, striking out eight and walking five.

Max Arsenault hit a three-run homer and Henry followed with a solo shot in a seven-run first inning rally.

Nick Vardaro had three hits for the winners with Bourque and Andrew Stacy collecting two eacy.

Doyon and Chris O’Connors had two hits each for RIC.

Trinity sweeps Colby

At Hartford, Trinity took a pair from Colby 9-2 and 18-5 in New England Small College Athletic Conference play.

In the opener, James Wood had three hits and Colby Tucker, Chandler Barnard and Tom DiBenedetto drove in two runs each for the winners.

John Murphy had a homer among his two hits in the opener and Tom Salemy had two hits for Colby.

In the second game, Matt Sullivan went four-for-four and Kent Graham homered and drove in four runs as Trinity had 18 hits.

Salemy had three hits, and Ryan Conlon and John LaMantia both had two hits for Colby in the second game.

At Medford, Mass., Nick Lawler’s two-run homer followed a two-run single by Patrick Duchette to key a four-run first inning that sent the Polar Bears on their way to victory in the nightcap.

Duchette had three hits and three RBIs while Lawler, Chris McCann and Joe Pace had two hits apiece. Ryan Turgeon picked up the win with five innings of six-hit, two-run ball.

Bryan McDavit and and Corey Pontes had three hits each for Tufts with one of McDavit’s hits being a solo homer.

In the opener, McDavit tripled to lead off the ninth and continued home on a throwing error to win it.

McDavit also had a single and Brian Casey pitched 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief to collect the win.

Joe Berte homered and singled for Bowdoin and Duchette doubled and singled.
