BANGOR – The Husson College Eagles got the clutch hits in the first game and the Thomas College Terriers responded with timely hits in the nightcap as the rivals split a Sunday North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at the Winkin Baseball Complex.
Husson won the opener 7-4 before Thomas triumphed 3-0 in the second game.
Husson is 4-13 overall, 1-1 in the NAC while Thomas is 6-11, 1-3, respectively.
Freshman righties Justin Willey and Cory Estes combined on the four-hit shutout while stranding 12 Eagle runners. Husson went just 2-for-19 with men on base in Game 2.
“My curve was my best pitch, I guess,” said Willey. “I was leaving my fastball up.”
The hard-throwing Willey said his curve was the pitch he relied upon to get out of jams.
“I was getting some popups with it,” said Willey.
Husson second baseman Danny White said, “He definitely went to his curve when we were in big situations. He had a good curveball.”
Willey allowed four hits, walked six and hit a batter in five innings but held the Eagles to a 2-for-14 showing with men on base. Estes pitched two hitless innings with four strikeouts. Husson went 0-for-5 with men on base against Estes.
Thomas scored the only run it was to need in the first inning when Matt Pavlis reached on a throwing error by third baseman Nick Arthers and scored on the third of three walks issued by lefty Chad Lavway in the inning.
Husson got the leadoff man on in the first six innings and had at least two on base through the first five but couldn’t capitalize.
The Eagles had two on and nobody out in the third but Willey caught Dennis Graham looking at a called third strike, induced Joe Robicheau to bounce to third and, a walk later, got Jeff Miller to ground to short.
The Terriers scored two important insurance runs with two outs in the fifth as Jim Pierce delivered an RBI double and Tim Costa singled him home.
Aaron Bouyea had opened the fifth with a single down the third-base line and Nick Cloutier sacrificed him to second before Pierce ripped his opposite-field double to right-center.
“They were pitching me outside all day so I tried to go to right and finally got it over the second baseman’s head,” said Pierce. “[Lavway] had been throwing me sliders on every second strike so I was sitting on it and I got a good pitch [to hit].”
Lavway said, “I let that one slip out of my hands a little bit and he took advantage.”
Costa followed with a line drive single to right.
Arthers was the game’s only repeat hitter with two singles.
In the opener, freshman right fielder Brett Garland’s two-run double gave Husson the lead for good in a three-run second inning uprising.
Garland entered the game with just one hit on the year.
“I’ve been struggling. I had a bad Florida trip. To come out of this little hole I’m in felt really good,” said Garland, who hit righty Brian Gardner’s slider to right-center to drive in Robicheau, who had walked, and Andy Patterson, who had singled off the third base bag.
“I just went with the pitch,” said Garland.
“They hit my slider well today. They went with it instead of trying to pull it. They had timely hits,” said Gardner.
Husson scored five runs with two outs and went 7-for-16 with men on base in the opener.
Husson added three more runs in the fourth.
Bryan Biggers reached on a two-out bunt single and continued to third on Gardner’s throwing error; White walked and stole second; Biggers scored on Adam Sheehan’s infield hit; a passed ball allowed another run to score and Arthers doubled home the final run.
Graham singled home a run in the sixth.
Bob Webber pitched six innings of six-hit, four-run ball (three earned), striking out two and walking one to pick up the win. James Gray pitched a perfect seventh.
“My fastball wasn’t that fast. My best pitch was my split-fingered. It kept them off-balance. And my curve dropped in pretty good, too,” said Webber who threw 46 strikes among his 69 pitches.
White, Sheehan, Arthers and Garland had two hits each for Husson while Pavlis homered and doubled for Thomas and Mike Chamard doubled and singled.
