Star City breakfast to laud County Eagle Scouts

Here is a delightful invitation for Eagle Scouts of all ages who live in the Aroostook County area, from Danforth to the St. John Valley.

Tom and Kathy Peary e-mailed that the Katahdin Area Council Boy Scouts of America North Star District will hold a recognition breakfast for all men who have received the Eagle Scout Award and who live in The County.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 28, in the Fellowship Hall of Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, 79 Fleetwood St., Presque Isle.

The breakfast will be served by the Order of the Arrow members, and representatives of the district committee will recognize men who received their awards more than 50 years ago, as well as young men who recently have become Eagle Scouts.

The breakfast also includes a brief presentation explaining some of the “exciting new programs available in Scouting today,” the Pearys wrote.

Anyone who is an Eagle Scout, or who knows of someone who has received this award and who lives in this area of Maine, is especially invited to attend the breakfast.

If you have questions or want more information, please e-mail Eagle Scout Steve Farnham at stevefarham@aroostookaging.org or call him at 769-8381.

Anyone who is interested in the organization, or the program, is invited to attend the UPtown Business & Professional Women luncheon meeting at noon Wednesday, April 18, at the Muddy Rudder Restaurant in Brewer.

The cost, including lunch and tip, is $10.

The guest speaker will be Bangor International Airport director Rebecca Hupp, who will discuss future plans for BIA and address her unique career path as a woman.

For more information, call club president Marie Saucier at 992-5042.

Children in kindergarten through grade five are invited to be part of the Page Farm and Home Museum History Fun Day.

This vacation-day event is 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the museum on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono.

The fee is $4 to cover the cost of materials, and advance registration is requested.

The museum is accessible to people with disabilities, and you can register your child by calling the museum at 581-4100.

Museum director Patricia Henner, her staff and volunteers will help children participate in activities that were popular from 1865 through 1940.

History Fun Day activities range from food preservation to ice cream making, fiber arts and weaving, papermaking, maple sugaring and raising poultry.

The nonprofit Page Farm and Home Museum is the last original agricultural building on the UMaine campus and houses a large collection of farm implements and household items.

WHSN 89.3 FM, the student-run radio station operated by The New England School of Communications and owned by Husson College in Bangor, is hosting the fourth annual Acoustic Showcase at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the Keith Anderson Community Building, 19 Bennoch Road, Orono.

Admission is $10 at the door, and all proceeds from this chemical-free event benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society Maine Chapter.

WHSN program director Mark Nason reports, “The event will bring together some of Maine’s best musicians for a great cause. Listeners will be able to hear the latest music from bands such as Some Damned English City, Spilled Milk, Jessie Chazin, Lindsey Ray, Andy Mead and Lauryn Hottinger.”

Nason added that the concert not only will highlight great musicians in Maine, but, with all proceeds benefiting MS Maine Chapter, also is “a win-win” event.

Steve Bowler has announced that Dirigo Pines Retirement Community will hold a Volunteer Fair from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in its media center at the Orono facility.

Area residents are invited to visit with more than a dozen local community groups that will have individuals staffing information booths and available to discuss their services and volunteer opportunities.

At the Volunteer Fair, you can learn about opportunities to work with Bangor area agencies including Eastern Maine Medical Center, Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, the American Cancer Society, Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center, Eastern Agency on Aging, TRIAD, Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, Literacy Volunteers Bangor Chapter, the Orono Public Library, United Way of Eastern Maine, the Orono Health Association, Bangor Senior Day Care and Dirigo Pines.
