At the University of Maine, students are required to register weapons with the Public Safety Department on campus.

“That’s any kind of weapon, even paintball guns,” UM spokesman Joe Carr said Monday.

The weapons are locked in storage at the public safety facility, and students must show proper identification in order to retrieve them.

No registration process is necessary at Husson College or Eastern Maine Community College, both in Bangor, because weapons aren’t allowed on campus.

“We don’t allow them to bring their guns here at all, ever,” Husson spokeswoman Julie Green said Monday. “They do ask on occasion during hunting season … but we do not allow that.”

EMCC doesn’t allow firearms, ammunition or explosives of any kind on any of its campus properties or in any campus buildings, Dan Belyea, EMCC director of facilities management, said Monday.

“That’s been a long-standing policy that we’ve had here at the college,” he said.

After word of Monday’s deadly shootings in Virginia, UM Dean of Students Robert Dana sent an e-mail to all UM students. It said, in part:

“I write today to remind all students that UMaine is a caring, supportive community. If you, or anyone you know, feel overwhelmed by the stresses associated with being a college student, or by this horrible incident, please let us know. UMaine has supportive resources and caring professionals in various places, including the Dean of Students office, the Counseling Center, and Residence Life.”
