Brewer hires firm to paint street lines

BREWER – A Vermont firm was the lowest bidder for painting street lines in the city and was hired last week by city councilors to do the job this summer.

The City Council hired L&D Safety Marking Corp. of Barre, Vt., at its April 10 meeting for the job at a cost of $23,870.

Councilors also hired GR Roofing of Bangor for $73,705 to replace the auditorium roof, with the expectation that work will begin this spring. Four companies put in bids for the job.

During the meeting, the council also:

. Recognized Brewer High School’s 2006-07 Class A state championship hockey team; police Officer Amy Nickerson as the Brewer Police Officer of the Year for 2006; and St. Joseph Hospital for 60 years of providing services to the area.

. Changed the May regular meeting date from May 8 to May 22.

. Accepted $1,144 for the Police Department from forfeited funds seized though a successful investigation in partnership with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

. Amended the sewer and pretreatment ordinance by creating regulations for non-stormwater discharges that cover inspections, monitoring and enforcement. Fines also were established for violators who pollute these waters, running from $100 a day and-or violation for repeat minor discharges to $2,500 a day and-or violation for significant or intentional discharges.

. Declared April as Autism Awareness Month and Foster Care Awareness Month and April 29-May 5 Municipal Clerks Week.

. Purchased a 2007 Ford F150 as a replacement pickup truck for the Water Pollution Control Facility at a cost of $19,362.

. Issued amusement license renewals for Cap’s Tavern, 494 S. Main St.; Fraternal Order of Eagles, 22 Atlantic Ave.; Brewster’s Fine Food & Drink, 359 Wilson St.; Jeff’s Catering, 15 Littlefield Way; Muddy Rudder, 5 South Main St.; and Dino’s Pizza, 393 North Main St.

. Approved allowing the Bangor-Brewer Farmers’ Market Association to lease the Brewer Auditorium parking lot from May 1 to Oct. 31 for $1,200 to operate a farmer’s market, and the Penobscot County Farmers Market Association to do the same for $480.
