USDA offers funds for rural programs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced the availability of almost $128 million in federal loans and grants to help rural communities in Maine and other states meet their health care and education needs.

Many areas of rural Maine are already served by the telemedicine and distance learning technologies the funding supports.

Telemedicine makes it possible for doctors anywhere in the world to examine and direct the treatment of patients in a rural clinic or other setting. The technology is in use on some Maine islands and in several rural communities in the northern part of the state.

Distance learning technology allows students in isolated areas to participate in classroom discussions and interact with instructors and fellow students.

Individuals and organizations in Maine interested in applying for the funding should contact Gary Vanedestine at the USDA office in Bangor at 990-9121 or visit www.usda.gov/rus/telecom/dlt/dlt.htm.
