HAMPDEN – A local woman was taken to the hospital to be evaluated Tuesday after carbon monoxide monitors went off in a home at 674 Main Road.

The carbon monoxide was caused when water in the home’s flooded basement got into the furnace and damaged it, Hampden fire Lt. Ray Pipes said Thursday.

“Anytime you have something that starts burning improperly, it generates carbon monoxide,” he said.

Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. was called to turn off the power to the home until the problem could be resolved.

Pipes noted that it’s common to see problems like this when there are power outages and people start running fuel-fired appliances, such as generators and put them in damp or wet basements, or too near an open window. (Aimee Dolloff, BDN)
