BELFAST – A Waldo man faces a number of charges after running from the scene of a rollover accident and leaving his injured girlfriend to fend for herself, according to police.

Steve Littlefield, 21, was charged with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, failure to render assistance at a personal injury accident and failure to report an accident by the quickest means following the 7:37 a.m. accident on the Doak Road Wednesday.

Littlefield showed up at the Police Department nine hours later.

Littlefield’s passenger, Ashleigh Gibbs, 17, of Brooks was taken by ambulance from the scene by Belfast Ambulance to Waldo County General Hospital where she was treated for bumps and bruises and released.

Patrolman Howard Dakin said Thursday that Littlefield was driving toward downtown Belfast on the Doak Road in a 1999 Toyota pickup truck when he failed to negotiate a curve near Doak’s Machine Shop, overcorrected and skidded across the road and rolled the pickup into a ditch.

Dakin said Gibbs told him that Littlefield climbed over her to get out of the truck and then ran away. He turned himself in to Sgt. Walter Corey at 4:30 p.m.

Dakin said neither of the pickup’s occupants were wearing seatbelts. He said Gibbs’s passenger side window was down and she got covered in mud and water when the truck hit the ditch.

He said her injuries were caused when she “bounced around” inside the truck’s cab as the pickup rolled over. Damage to the truck was estimated at $2,000. Police impounded the truck.

Dakin also responded to a two-car wreck on Route 1 in front of Footbridge Road early Thursday.

Janice L. Moody, 56, of Prospect had been traveling toward the downtown in a 2002 Chevrolet at 8:10 a.m. when she stopped at Footbridge Road to make a left turn to Harbor Hill, her place of employment.

April N. Pickering, 20, of Stockton Springs, who was driving behind Moody in a 1989 Nissan, “was distracted by the sun” and did not see the car stopped in front of her.

Pickering tried to avoid a collision, but the driver’s side of the car smashed into the rear of Moody’s vehicle.

Damage to Moody’s car was estimated at $2,000, while damage to Pickering’s was estimated at $1,500. Both were able to drive their cars from the scene.
