Muzzy, Harvey named to play in all-star game Bates names McHugh new athletic director

Husson College of Bangor men’s basketball players Jason Harvey and Tyler Muzzy, Saint Joseph’s of Standish’s Chad Pulkkinen and Bowdoin of Brunswick’s Kevin Bradley have been selected to participate in the Division III New England Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star game.

The game will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Staake Gymnasium at Babson College in Babson Park, Mass.

The game benefits the Coaches vs. Cancer charity.

Muzzy, a guard-forward from Greenville, and Harvey, a guard from Bucksport, will play on the same team with Bradley, a guard from Seekonk, Mass. Pulkkinen is a guard from Windham.

In addition to the all-star game there will be a free clinic at 3:30 p.m. that will be run by several of the game’s participants and area coaches. There will also be a raffle for prizes including Boston Celtics memorabilia and a chance to take a basketball shot for $50,000. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. Admission is free for children under the age of 12.

Juskewitch, Bates help Ithaca win

Dedham’s Ellen Juskewitch and Holden’s Amy Bates were members of Ithaca College’s third varsity 8 boat that won a women’s crew race at Worcester, Mass., last weekend.

Juskewitch, a sophomore, is the second seat. Bates, also a sophomore, is the bow.

The Bombers of Ithaca, N.Y., finished in 8 minutes, 26 seconds, ahead of Rochester Institute of Technology of New York (8:29.0) and Ithaca’s second novice 8 (9:15.9).

Bates names new athletic director

Kevin McHugh, who has served as director of athletics at The College of New Jersey since 1987, has been named athletic director and chair of the physical education department at Bates College in Lewiston.

He had also been the executive director for student development and campus programs in recent years.

The 50-year-old McHugh succeeds Dana Mulholland, who has served as interim athletic director for the last year after replacing Suzanne Coffey. Coffey had been the AD from 1991 to 2006.

McHugh, a native of Wharton, N.J., will assume the post July 1.

Bates president Elaine Tuttle Hansen said in a press release, “Kevin McHugh comes to Bates with a well-earned and wide-ranging reputation as a strategic thinker, a hard worker and a strong leader both at The College of New Jersey and on the national college sports scene. His life and career exemplify the finest qualities of athletic leadership, and we are very pleased that he will be joining Bates as director of athletics.”

McHugh said he was ” honored, gratified and excited” to be the new AD at Bates.

“Each visit to the campus further solidified my previous perceptions of the Bates community. My interactions with members of the search committee, the department of athletics and the student-athletes convinced me that Bates is a special place,” said McHugh.

Beers in the running for Colby

Jared Beers of Kittery has been named head coach of the Colby College men’s cross country and track and field teams.

Beers is a 2001 Colby graduate who has been the teams’ assistant coach for three years and interim head coach last year. He broke two school records while running at Colby (in the 400 meters and 1,600 relay) and was a captain during his junior and senior seasons.
