BREWER – Sam Besse pitched a four-hit shutout, striking out four and walking none as Bangor opened the high school softball season with a 2-0 victory over Brewer Friday.

Sam Bedore had a double while Emily Heath added a single and a run scored for the Rams.

Meghan McLain hit a double for Brewer while Jordan McLain had 10 strikeouts.

At Deer Isle, Karin Bird singled five times and knocked in three runs to lead Lee Academy to the season-opening win.

Brooke Harris doubled and singled to drive in two runs for the Pandas and Morgan McGaw added a double and a single.

Anika Powers hit a three-run home run in the first inning and added an RBI double for Deer Isle-Stonington. Audra Eaton doubled and singled and drove in a run.

Ellsworth sweeps Caribou

At Ellsworth, senior Catie Cravens pitched a one-hit shutout while allowing one walk and striking out 13 through five innings to lead Ellsworth over Caribou 12-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Eagles also won the second game 11-7.

In the first game, Emily Miller had three singles and four runs scored for Ellsworth and Cravens had a two-run triple in the third inning.

Ali Richards singled on the first pitch of the game for Caribou.

In the second game, Maggie Seavey hit three singles and drove in two runs for the Eagles. Miller had two singles and two runs and Sabrina Jellison singled and scored four times.

Jessica Kinney had three singles and two runs for Caribou and Kristen Espling doubled and singled to drive in three runs.

At East Machias, junior Kayla Wood allowed just two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out 10 to lead Washington Academy past Woodland.

Carilla Fritz hit a there-run home run in the fourth inning for the Raiders. Lauren Finn tripled and singled and Megan Look had two doubles and two RBIs.

Courtney Cochran hit an RBI double in the first inning for the Dragons.

At Deer Isle, the Mariners scored nine runs in the first inning en route to the season-opening victory.

Rob Brown doubled three times with five RBIs and Eben Powers knocked in five runs with four singles. Bryan Ciomei provided a double, a single and four RBIs.

Ray Garcia and Ben Hardie combined on a two-hitter, with Garcia working three hitless innings with seven strikeouts. Hardie fanned five in two innings.

Ryan Beers and Devan Parker singled for Lee Academy.

Ellsworth, Caribou split

At Ellsworth, Pat Thibodeau hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to lift Caribou over Ellsworth 6-4 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Eagles took the first game 6-3.

In the second game, Phil St. Peter hit a double and three singles to drive in four runs for Caribou and Dustin Haines singled twice.

Berry and Hunnewell each doubled and scored a run for Ellsworth.

In the first game, Eric Folmer singled twice to knock in two runs for Ellsworth and Pat Kelley doubled and singled while pitching a six-hitter. Nick Hunnewell and Greg Berry added two singles apiece.

Jon Noyes singled twice for Caribou.

At Harrington, Josh Beal’s run-scoring single and an infield error that allowed two runs to score keyed a three-run fifth inning that erased a 5-4 deficit and gave Narraguagus the lead for good.

Corey Smith doubled and singled, drove in a run and scored a pair for the Knights. He also picked up the win with a complete-game six-hitter, striking out eight and walking two.

Kyle Tenan singled and scored twice for Narraguagus.

Mike Jenkins and Joe Whitney each doubled and singled for Machias and had an RBI.

Jake Funari pitched a six-hit complete game in defeat with six strikeouts and six walks.
