Husson tops Becker twice Eagles earn split in Saturday doubleheader at Elms

WORCESTER, Mass. – Adam Sheehan and Joe Robicheau each drove in four runs Sunday as Husson College of Bangor swept a North Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader from Becker College by scores of 7-1 and 10-6.

In the first game, Jeff Miller tallied a triple, a single, an RBI and scored a run for the Eagles behind Chad Lavway, who scattered seven hits.

In the second game, Danny White singled twice with two RBIs and Robicheau smacked a double for Husson.

Elms splits with Husson

At Holyoke, Mass., Saturday, Adam Sheehan’s three-run triple in the top of the second inning staked Husson to an early lead as the Eagles defeated Elms College 12-6 en route to a split of their NAC baseball doubleheader.

Joe Sawa went 5-for-5 to lift the Blazers to a 6-3 victory in the second game.

In the first game, Sheehan’s triple keyed a six-run uprising in the second inning as Husson rallied from an early 2-0 deficit.

In the second game, the Blazers scored two runs in the second, third and sixth innings. Chris Pease struck out seven in a solid six-inning pitching performance for Husson.

Castleton State 5-13, UMF 1-8

At Castleton, Vt., on Sunday, the host Spartans earned a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader sweep from the University of Maine-Farmington.

In the first game, Kevin Cook pitched a four-hitter in Castleton’s 5-1 win. Kyle Shea had an RBI double to plate UMF’s only run. Pat Howell took the pitching loss.

In the second game, Castleton State cruised to a 13-8 win after erupting for 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Shea had a double, two singles and two RBIs for UMF. Travis Bass had four singles and scored three runs for Castleton State.

Colby sweeps UM-Presque Isle

At Waterville, Robert Rosenbaum pitched a four-hit shutout in the opener Sunday and Colby had six extra-base hits in the second game as the Mules swept the University of Maine-Presque Isle at Coombs Field.

In the first game, Rosenbaum struck out one and walked three in earning the win. Colby broke the game open with seven first-inning runs.

Andy Carr had three singles and three RBIs, while Tom Salemy had two doubles and a single and Corey Martin singled three times.

In the second game, Colby scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 7-7 tie. Martin had a triple and two singles to lead the Mules.

Castleton sweeps Thomas

At Castleton, Vt., on Saturday, Jeremy Gilcris scattered eight hits in the opener as the host Spartans topped Thomas of Waterville 8-2.

Castleton State completed the sweep with a 6-5 win in the second game.

In the first game, Eric Anderson hit a two-run single as Castleton State took control in the second inning.

Mike Chamard doubled and singled for Thomas, while Matt Pavlis singled twice.

In the second game, Ryan Bouck’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh plated the winning run. Chamard tripled, doubled and singled for Thomas, while Pavlis doubled and singled twice.

Colby splits with Bates

At Lewiston Saturday, Colby College of Waterville erupted for 19 hits in the second game of a doubleheader to defeat Bates 18-9 at Leahey Field.

The Bobcats won the opener 6-0 behind a six-hit shutout by senior pitcher Griffin Finan.

In the first game, Erik Hood hit a two-run homer for Bates, while Denis Hogan added a two-run single.

In the second game, Tom Salemy homered and singled twice with two runs and five RBIs for Colby, while John Murphy homered and doubled with three runs and three RBIs.

Saint Joseph’s, Elms split

At Holyoke, Mass., on Sunday, Wade Oliver of Owls Head had three singles as Saint Joseph’s College of Standish defeated Elms 6-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Elms rallied from an 8-4 third-inning deficit to earn a 10-8 win in the second game.

In the first game, Saint Joseph’s scored five runs in the fifth inning to take control. Ben Cutter earned the pitching win, scattering five hits while striking out six and allowing just two earned runs.

Mark Clapp of Blue Hill had two RBIs for the Monks.

In the second game, Nate Hawes had a home run, two singles and six RBIs to lead the Blazers to victory.

Luke Enman had a triple, double and single for Saint Joseph’s, while Mike Burdin had three singles.

At Brunswick on Sunday, Bowdoin scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim the victory.

Two singles and a walk loaded the bases with no outs before Pat Duchette was hit by a pitch to force in a run and draw Bowdoin within 5-4.

One out later, Nick Lawler was hit by a pitch to tie the game, then Tyler Turgeon was hit by another pitch to force in the winning run.

Lawler also hit a two-run homer for Bowdoin.

Bowdoin, Wesleyan split

At Brunswick Saturday, Bowdoin used a five-run fifth inning to earn an 8-5 victory over visiting Wesleyan in the first game of a doubleheader at Pickard Field. The Cardinals took an early lead en route to an 8-6 win in the second game.

In the first game, Reid Auger hit a grand slam to highlight Bowdoin’s fifth-inning uprising, which rallied the Polar Bears from a 2-1 deficit.

In the second game, Drew Dominguez hit a two-out, two-run single in the second inning to stake Wesleyan to a 3-0 lead it didn’t relinquish.

Pat Duchette doubled and singled for Bowdoin, while Auger singled twice and Joe Pace homered.

USM sweeps Plymouth State

At Gorham, Nick Vardaro had six hits, scored four runs and drove in three to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies sweep a Little East Conference baseball doubleheader from the Plymouth State University Panthers 6-2 and 11-8 Saturday.

In the first game, Plymouth State took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Josh Labossiere hit a two-out home run. The Huskies responded with three runs in their half of the inning. Chris Burleson drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Nick Vardaro and Max Arsenault both scored on an error.

In the second game, PSU took a 5-1 lead in the third inning. The Panthers took advantage of three hits, a hit batsman and four walks to score five times. The Huskies came back to score four for a tie, and took control of the game in the sixth inning scoring six runs.
