BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Maine scored twice in the top of the seventh inning Sunday to rally for a 3-2 America East softball victory over the University of Vermont and a sweep of their three-game weekend series at Archie Paul Field.

Maine (21-22 overall, 6-7 in AE play) defeated the Catamounts 6-1 and 11-3 on Saturday. Vermont falls to 9-25 overall, 2-12 in conference play.

In Sunday’s game, Tara Vilardo was hit by a pitch to open the Maine seventh, and with one out Ashley Waters doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Kristen Calvetti then laid down a nicely placed bunt that scored Vilardo from third with the tying run.

Freshman Alexis Souhlaris, who had homered in the first inning for Maine’s other run, followed with a grounder to second base, but the fielder Calvetti got tangled up with Maine pinch-runner Alexis Pullen, and Waters scored from third base on the play.

Jessica Ghazali scattered eight hits in a complete-game pitching effort for Maine, walking just one batter.

Souhlaris finished with a home run and two singles to go with two RBIs for Maine, while Kate Joseph doubled and singled and Kristie Hawkins singled twice for the Black Bears. Vermont pitcher Aimee Kern had four singles.

In Saturday’s first game, Souhlaris had two doubles, a single and two RBIs to lead Maine to victory, while Whitney Spangler hit a solo home run and a double and Joseph singled twice.

Christine McGivney earned the pitching win for the Black Bears, allowing one run over five innings while striking out five batters.

In Saturday’s second game, Maine erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning to rally from a 3-0 deficit. Waters hit a grand slam to highlight that rally.

Souhlaris and Joseph each tripled and singled for the Black Bear, while Hawkins doubled and singled and Spangler singled twice.

Ghazali relieved Maine starter Jenna Balent in the second inning and allowed two hits and no runs over 4 1/3 innings to earn the pitching win.

Kern took the pitching loss, but did strike out nine to set a Vermont record for career strikeouts with 414.
