Colby earns split with Polar Bears

WATERVILLE – Carlie Minichino hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference as Colby College edged Bowdoin College of Brunswick 2-1 in the second game of a NESCAC softball doubleheader Wednesday.

Bowdoin defeated Colby in the first game 7-2.

In the first game, Shavonne Lord, Sarah Stern and Jessica Paris all had two hits for Bowdoin.

Christine Gillespie, Essie Widlanski and Miki Starr each had a double for the Mules.

In the second game, Randi Arsenault earned the win for the White Mules, allowing one run on five hits.

Shavonne Lord had a double for the Polar Bears.

Saint Joseph’s sweeps Salem State

At Standish, Saint Joseph’s scored twice in the bottom of the eighth for a 7-6 win over Salem State in the second game of a doubleheader. The Monks took the first game 9-1.

In the first game, Megan Farrell hit a double, drove in three RBIs and had two runs scored to lead Saint Joseph’s. Liddy van der Linden brought home two runs and Amanda Roy had two singles. Kayla Soucy tallied a double and a run scored for the Monks.

Jess Baird led Salem State with two singles and an RBI.

In the second game, Jamie Morrison led the way with three singles and two RBIs for the winners.

Van der Linden and Sarah Martin each notched two singles and an RBI for the Monks.

Amanda Scola paced Salem State with a single and two RBIs.

Husson, UMF split

At Farmington, Erin Porter drove in five runs to lead UMaine-Farmington to a 10-4 victory over Husson College of Bangor in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Eagles came back to win the nightcap 10-2.

In the first game, Porter slapped a pair of two-run singles while Sarah Defilipp allowed four runs on nine hits in six innings of work.

Lauren Overlock doubled and singled twice to drive in three runs for the Beavers, now 11-3 on the season.

In the second game, the Eagles scored twice in the fourth inning and three more in the sixth to break open a 3-2 game against UMF starter Meagan Carman.

Defillip slapped three singles and Overlock added two more for the Beavers.

Thomas, Husson split

At Waterville Tuesday, Nicole Smith pitched a three-hit shutout, waling none and striking out 10 to lead Thomas College to a 5-0 win over Husson College of Bangor in the first game of a doubleheader.

The Eagles took the second game 7-6.

In the first game, Kim Denbow sparked the Terriers’ offense with a pair of singles and two RBIs while Jen Higgins singled three times, stole three bases and scored three runs.

Jenny Rollins, Janika Kelly and Cassie Berry had a single apiece for Husson.

In the second game, a two-run double by Rollins capped a five-run seventh inning in which the Eagles broke open a 2-2 game.

Britini Adams doubled, singled twice and drove in a pair of runs for the winners.

Brittany Morin paced Thomas with a two-run double and a couple of singles.

Saint Joseph’s 9, Salem State 3

At Standish, sophomore Wade Oliver of Owls Head hit a solo home run, a two-run double, and a single to lead the Saint Joseph’s College Monks by Salem State.

Luke Enman hit two RBI doubles and a single for the Monks. Keil Martin and Travis Adams each singled twice. Craig Woodbrey earned the victory.
