BANGOR – Bowdoin College junior first baseman Patrick Duchette hadn’t been having a good night.

That all changed with one swing of the bat.

Duchette lined a one-out single to center in the 12th inning to deliver Marc Dallaire from second and give the Polar Bears a 5-4 win over Husson College at the Winkin Baseball Complex Wednesday night.

Wales’ Duchette, who played for Oak Hill High School, was 0-for-4 with a walk before he singled off Husson reliever Sam Adolphsen.

“I was 0-for-4 and had a chance to drive in a run in the first inning [but didn’t come through]. I wasn’t going to let it happen again,” said the lefthanded-hitting Duchette. “He threw me a fastball over my letters and I jumped on it.”

“I faced him in high school and Legion ball. He’s a real good hitter,” said Adolphsen, who absorbed the loss.

Dallaire opened the 12th with a perfectly placed bunt single and Chris McCann sacrificed him to second. John Lawrie, who had entered the game in the 10th and hadn’t been to the plate yet, was walked intentionally to set up a possible double play.

But the move backfired when Duchette singled.

Husson (11-17) would have won the game in regulation if it hadn’t been for a weird bounce in the seventh inning.

With Andrew Patterson on third and Dennis Graham at first with two outs, Bryan Biggers ripped a sharp ground ball up the middle.

The ball was headed for center field when it hit the pitching rubber, popped in the air, and curled back to catcher Mike Buckley. He alertly snared the ball and ran Patterson back toward third before throwing to third baseman Nick Lawler to nail him.

“That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. That was huge,” said Duchette, who credited Buckley for making a heads-up play.

“Those are the breaks,” said Patterson.

Lawler had factored prominently in the top of the sixth by tying the game with a two-run homer to left off Patterson. It was his fourth of the year.

“I threw him an outside fastball,” said Patterson, who pitched six innings of sparkling, four-hit, two-run baseball in relief of Anthony DeRosa.

DeRosa, making his first appearance after suffering a minor head injury in a car accident three weeks ago, hurled four strong innings of five-hit, two-run (one earned) ball.

Bowdoin (13-12) used two errors to take a 1-0 lead in the first, but Husson tied it in the bottom of the first on an Adam Sheehan single, a wild pitch, and Joe Robicheau’s RBI single.

Husson added single runs off starter Paul Evans in the second, third, and fourth before the Bowdoin bullpen shut down the Eagles. Seth Gabarro from Dover-Foxcroft, Ian Merry, Joe Pace, Tyler Turgeon, Buckley, and Kleier scattered six hits over the final eight innings.

Jeff Miller’s triple and Biggers’ sacrifice fly made it 2-1 in the second, Robicheau’s triple and Nick Arthers’ fielder’s choice expanded the lead to 3-1 after three, and after Dallaire got one back in the fourth with a sharp RBI single to center, a Danny White single and three walks produced Husson’s fourth-inning run.

Dallaire had three singles for Bowdoin, and Lawler had a single to go with his homer.

Robicheau had three hits, including his triple, to pace the Eagles’ 13-hit attack. White doubled and singled while Patterson and Sheehan had two singles apiece.
