OLD TOWN – Old Town Elementary School will participate in the national Reach Out Now Teach-In at 1 p.m. Monday, April 30.

First Lady Karen Baldacci will lead the discussion about why and how young people can avoid alcohol abuse.

The River Coalition, in collaboration with the Maine Office of Substance Abuse, the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, is sponsoring the event.

New data shows that some 10.8 million youngsters ages 12-20 have used alcohol illegally, including 41 percent of adolescents by the time they reach eighth grade. A state survey shows that 75 percent of sixth-graders in the area have used alcohol.
