Orono Basketball School
ORONO – The Orono Recreation Department is accepting registrations for the Orono Basketball School at Orono High School. It offers a girls’ week, July 9-13, and a boys’ week, June 25-29. Each week includes a morning session for pupils entering grades three through six and an afternoon session for grades five through nine. The cost is $75.
The Orono Basketball School provides the opportunity for youth to learn skills in a fun and positive environment that allows for success for all those involved. Pupils have the use of two full-sized gymnasiums in which to learn and improve basketball skills.
Each day includes a variety of skills teaching, skill drills, contests and games. Participants take part in a detailed video-taped critique of shooting technique. Every pupil will take home an evaluation of skills and abilities with suggestions for continued practice at home.
Tim Pearson and Mike Corneil are the directors of the Orono Basketball School for the 13th year. Pearson, of Brewer, has taught physical education in the area for 20 years and was the Maine Physical Education Teacher of the Year in 2000. Corneil, an Orono High School graduate, has taught, officiated and coached in the area for 20 years. The two men personally recruit their staff from local coaches and physical education teachers who are experienced in basketball and in working with elementary and middle school aged youth. The staff includes at least one coach for every eight participants.
