Warriors, weather can’t cool off Bangor’s Besse Rams’ pitcher stars in 3-0 shutout of Nokomis

BANGOR – While spectators huddled under blankets and players on the field covered themselves in sweats and knit caps, Sam Besse did her work on the Bangor High softball field Friday afternoon wearing a sleeveless uniform.

The chilly drizzle didn’t faze Besse, who tossed a one-hitter and hit an RBI double to lead the Rams to a 3-0 victory over Nokomis of Newport.

The junior had a perfect game going through 5 2/3 innings and finished with nine strikeouts and no walks as the Rams moved to 4-1.

“All I threw was my fastball and changeup,” she said. “I didn’t throw anything else.”

Two pitches would be more than enough. Besse retired 17 straight before giving up a two-out, line-drive single to Nokomis’ No. 9 batter Jessica Brown in the top of the sixth.

She recorded five strikeouts looking, including the batter after Brown, to end the scoring threat by the Warriors (3-2).

“She pitched very well,” Nokomis coach J.D. McLellan said. “She mixed it up some and we just couldn’t get the bat on the ball.”

The rest of the fans and players dealt with the cold by donning extra clothing, but not Besse. She did accept a warm-up jacket for baserunning after her double, however.

“I feel very constricted when I’m pitching with Under Armour on,” she said, referring to a brand of athletic apparel. “It feels like I’m suffocating. This way I have more movement. It was a little chilly, but when you’re out there you’re not thinking about how cold it is.”

Bangor coach Don Stanhope said he wanted Besse to stick with the fastball and changeup because of the weather. The ball had to be dried at off at several points in the game.

“She’s a good, strong kid and throws the ball hard,” he said. “Today she had good spots.”

Bangor also fielded the ball well, including shortstop Amy Hackett’s alert snare of a bouncing ball up the middle in the third inning. She threw to first for the out.

The Rams had just enough offense to win as Nokomis ace Patrice Cianchette limited Bangor to five hits.

As usual, the heart of Bangor’s lineup did most of the hitting starting with No. 4 hitter Tawnya Godinez, who smacked a double to left field in the second inning.

“I laid off the riseball for a while and waited for a low, inside pitch,” Godinez said. “I like inside pitches and I got a hold of one. That’s when I got my double.”

She eventually scored on a groundout by No. 5 hitter Sam Bedore, who added another RBI when she singled home No. 3 Hackett, who had also singled.

Godinez singled and scored from first on Besse’s double in the sixth.

“We had been told their 3, 4 and 5 batters were just hammers,” McLellan said. “We were expecting that.”

Cianchette fanned four and walked two. McLellan said he was pleased with catcher Tricia Cossar, who called the game by herself for the first time because the setup of the dugouts makes it tough for coaches to communicate pitches to their catchers.
