ALBANY, N.Y. – The Albany Great Danes pounded out 16 hits Sunday, capping their America East weekend baseball series with a resounding 15-5 victory over the University of Maine at Alumni Field.

The Great Danes also won the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader 5-4 and took three of four contests from the Black Bears. UMaine won Saturday’s second game 13-5.

Coach Steve Trimper’s Bears slipped to 14-24 overall, 5-7 in America East play and occupy fifth place in the conference standings behind Albany (18-20, 5-7 AE), which owns the head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Bears play Southern Maine Wednesday at Sanford, then return to Mahaney Diamond for a four-game AE set with Vermont starting Friday.

On Sunday, the Great Danes reached starter Jose Mendoza for eight hits and eight earned runs in 3 2/3 innings while breezing to victory. The sophomore lefthander had worked five innings in Thursday’s nonleague game at Siena.

Steve Sayre paced Albany with two home runs and two singles good for three RBIs, while Steve Wyland singled three times and knocked in three runs amidst the Danes’ 16-hit attack.

Joel Barrett of Brewer led UMaine with two doubles and an RBI, while Curt Smith (three RBIs) smacked a two-run homer.

Cory Warrings (1-4) scattered six hits and four runs over seven innings to earn the win.

The Bears spotted Mendoza an early two-run lead on Barrett’s RBI double in the first inning and Kevin Jackson’s run-scoring fielder’s choice in the second. However, Albany scored once in the second, took the lead for good with two in the third, and extended the lead with five runs in the fourth.

In Saturday’s second game, UMaine backed Greg Norton with 16 hits on its way to victory. The senior from South Portland (4-3), spread out 11 hits and five runs.

Freshman Myckie Lugbauer headed the Bears’ offense with a double, two singles and four RBIs. Billy Cather provided a home run, a double and a single with three RBIs and Barrett had three singles and two RBIs.

Kevin McAvoy of Brewer added a double, a single and three RBIs, while Brian Hackett of Bangor singled twice.

Dave West stroked a homer, two doubles and a single with two RBIs for the Great Danes.

Trailing 2-1, UMaine took the lead for good while scoring three runs in the second inning. McAvoy singled, moved up on Lugbauer’s single and both rode home on Cather’s three-run shot to center.

The Bears added three runs in the fourth, keyed by Lugbauer’s two-run double, then tallied three in the sixth on McAvoy’s three-run double and three in the seventh.

In Saturday’s opener, Albany put together five consecutive two-out hits during a five-run sixth inning that gave the hosts the margin of victory.

Matt McGraw doubled and singled (two RBIs) and Smith doubled and singled to pace the Bears.

Tom Hill singled twice to pace Albany, while Sayre homered and Sean Donovan doubled, each plating two runs. Winner Josh Willimott (2-1) and Alexander Beaulieu combined to pitch 3 1/3 innings of hitless shutout relief for the hosts.

Hertzler (2-5) was in command for UMaine while allowing only one hit through 5 2/3 innings and retiring nine straight batters at one point.

Albany finally got to him. With two out, Leo Corvino beat out an infield hit, then Wyland and Hill singled to produce the first run. Donovan doubled home two runs, then scored when Sayre homered to left, chasing Hertzler.

The Bears had scored two runs in the third and fourth innings. McGraw poked an RBI double and Smith hit a run-scoring single in the third, while McGraw had an RBI single and Barrett a run-producing, bases-loaded walk in the fourth.
