BANGOR – Husson College swept a softball doubleheader against Lesley College here Sunday, winning 12-3 and 10-7.

In the second game, Jordan Pruett’s two-run double and run-scoring singles by Jenika Kelly, Shawna Bell, Jenny Rollins, Michelle Mulherin and Lindsay Mitchell keyed a seven-run sixth inning for Husson.

Mulherin finished with four hits for the Eagles and Kelly and Rollins had three apiece. Brittni Adams had two hits.

Georgia Saltzman had a pair of two-run homers and a single for Lesley. Jodi Fralick also had three hits and Gianna Spaziante had two hits for the Lynx.

In the first game, Rollins knocked in four runs with a solo homer and three-run triple. Mulherin had a two-run homer among her two hits and Cassie Berry had a solo blast to go with a two-run single. Shannon Pietras had two hits.

Saltzman had three hits for Lesley with Fralick, Spaziante and Courtnie Leakeas collecting two apiece.

UMF sweeps Becker

At Chicopee, Mass., Erin Porter recorded five hits and Kelly McDonough drove in four runs to lead University of Maine-Farmington to a doubleheader sweep of Becker in NAC softball action Saturday. Farmington won the first 6-3, and the second 12-3 to improve to 13-5 overall and 9-1 in conference play.

In the first game, UMF scored five times in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Alix Raymond and held off Becker for the remainder of the game. Sarah DeFilipp and Megan Goodrow added RBI singles in the inning, while DeFilipp picked up the victory with five innings of two-run pitching.

In the second game, Farmington scored five in the first and third innings to cruise to victory. The game only lasted five innings. A two-run double from Holly Tripp, who finished the game with four RBI, highlighted the first inning, while an RBI double by Renee Trafton was the big hit in the third. Meagan Carman allowed seven hits and three runs.

Elms beat UMF twice

At Chicopee, Mass., Tammie Tremblay scattered seven hits to lead Elms past UMaine-Farmington 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Elms won the second game 5-4.

Farmington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Kelly McDonough singled home Erin Porter in the fourth for the first run, while Lauren Overlock delivered a sacrifice fly to score an inning later.

In the second game, Farmington built a 4-0 lead following a three-run fourth inning in which Overlock delivered a two-run double after scoring the game’s first run in the opening inning.

Elms rallied with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4 and, in the bottom of the seventh, a pair of UMF errors on the same play allowed the winning run to score. Overlock and McDonough led UMF with three hits apiece.

Bowdoin sweeps Bates

At Brunswick, Sarah Stern blasted a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to cap a strong day for Bowdoin with a doubleheader sweep of Bates on Sunday, 9-1 and 8-5

In the first game, Bowdoin mercy-ruled the Bobcats scoring five runs in the second and three times in the fifth to take a 9-1 win. Julia Jacobs tossed five innings and allowed just a single hit while striking out five. Shavonne Lord delivered the big blow in the second inning with a bases-loaded double that plated three runs for Bowdoin.

In the second game, Caitlin Murphy scored two runs, while Katie Franklin drove in two runs to give Bates their late advantage. Bowdoin’s winning rally started with a leadoff triple from Lauren Coven.

At Lewiston, Trinity College defeated Bates College 10-2 in a five-inning, mercy rule shortened NESCAC East Division softball game Sunday at Lafayette Street Field. Trinity improves their record to 20-9 while Bates falls to 5-16.

Trinity scored four runs in the first inning, including back-to-back home runs by Ariana Mullin, a three-run shot, and Laura Cutler.

Bates plated two runs in the bottom of the first with an RBI double by Stacia Saniuk and a run-scoring base hit by Leah Citrin, but the Bantams added three runs in the third and fifth innings to put the game away.

USM splits with Keene

At Gorham, Sabrina Sevigny blasted a two-out game-winning double to center field to lift University of Southern Maine to a 5-4 win over Keene State College on Saturday. The Huskies dropped the first game 4-3 before rallying for the split in the nightcap.

In the first game, Melissa Scata of Keene State blasted a two-run homer and Katie Allenson had an RBI double in the fifth inning to lead the Owls to a 4-3 win. Keene led the Huskies from the start, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI double.

In the second game, USM trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh and took advantage of some timely hitting to earn the win. Christen Lachapelle led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Katie Martell. A walk to Anita Dixon gave the Huskies runners on first and third with one out. Pitcher Ashlee Nicholson got the second out of the inning on a popup before Sevigny connected on the game-winning hit.

UNE, Roger Williams split

At Biddeford Saturday, Sarah Hamel tossed a four-hit shutout as the University of New England Nor’easters earned a 5-0 win in the first game. Roger Williams won the second game 2-1.

In the first game, Caroline Engwer cranked a two-run homer and added an RBI single for the University of New England. Four different Rogers Williams players singled.

In the second game, LeEllen Lewis doubled in the fifth inning to plate the game-winning run for Roger Williams. UNE’s Michaela O’Rourke had an RBI double.

Thomas earns split with Elms

At Chicopee, Mass., Saturday, Nikki Smith hit a two-run double in the third and finished with three RBIs to spark the Terriers to a 5-2 win in the second game of a doubleheader. Elms took the first game 3-2 in nine innings.

In the first game, Danielle LaPlante of Elms knocked in the winning run with a bases-loaded bunt in the bottom of the ninth. Thomas pitcher Nikki Smith had a perfect game going until Elms singled in the fifth.

In the second game, the Terriers of Waterville added three more runs in the top of the seventh. LaPlante paced Elms with two singles and two RBIs.

At Leicester, Mass., Sunday, Jana Fetterhoff fired five innings of four-hit shutout ball, striking out nine, and she was backed by a 17-hit attack in the nightcap.

Lindsay Sierra had four hits and four RBIs for Thomas while Charlee Hayes had three hits and also knocked in four runs.

Brittany Morin and Fetterhoff had three hits apiece.

Lakisha Leach and Shannon Tibbetts had two hits each for Becker.

In the opener, Nikki Smith hurled six innings of eight-hit, two-run ball, striking out nine, and Jenny Higgins and Morin paced a 15-hit attack with three hits each.

Kristy Clement, Smith and Fetterhoff had two hits each. Clement had three RBIs.

Leann Norrman had three hits for Becker with Lisa Nguyen and Noelle Gleason chipping in with two each.

Tufts sweeps Colby

At Medford, Mass., Saturday, the Jumbos outscored the White Mules 23-2 in a three-game sweep.

In the first game, Lauren Gelmetti tossed a no-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks. The Jumbos allowed a baserunner in the fifth on an error to break up the perfect game. Casey Sullivan hit a two-run home run for Tufts.

In the second game, Heather Kleinberger hit a two-run single to spark the Jumbos to a three-run fourth inning. Colby’s Alyssa Crowell recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice in the second.

In the third game, Maya Ripecky keyed Tufts with a three-run homer in the first. Alaina Clark singled and scored the Mules’ only run on an error in the seventh.

At Biddeford, Katie Morin belted three homers and drove in six runs in the opener and threw five innings of four-hit, two-run ball in the nightcap to pace the University of New England.

In the opener, Megan Gaedje and Chelsea Cummings had a pair of hits apiece and Caroline Engwer had a three-run triple.

Sarah Hamel hurled five innings of three-hit, three-run (all unearned) ball.

Nicole Ferreira had two hits for Wentworth.

In the second game, Kelly Bedard and Lauren Webb doubled and singled and had two RBIs apiece to the Nor’easters.

Baseball

UMF sweeps two series

At Farmington, the UMaine-Farmington Beavers swept Elms 4-3 and 2-1 on Sunday to earn the fourth spot in the North Atlantic Conference playoffs.

Dan Hemdal scattered six hits while striking out nine to lead UMF to the 4-3 win while Brian Morrison gave up just five hits and struck out nine to lead UMF in the second game.

On Saturday, Pete McLaughlin’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 7-6 deficit in the nightcap and rally UMF past Becker College (Mass.).

McLaughlin and Aaron Wolfe had two hits apiece for the winners and Corey Provencher hit a two-run homer.

In the opener, Pat Howell tossed a complete game and his mates rallied from a 3-1 deficit to post the win.

Phineas Peake singled home the game-winning run in the sixth after UMF had tied it in the fifth on two-out RBI singles by McLaughlin and Tyler Hanson.

McLaughlin and Hanson had two hits apiece while Becker’s Josue Lopez belted a three-run double.

Bates 6, Husson 5

At Lewiston Sunday, Erik Hood’s grounder through the left side scored Brian Mahoney with the game-winning run for Bates in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Bates outhit Husson 17-6 and won despite stranding 15 men on base.

Hood had two singles and two RBIs for the Bobcats.

Danny White paced Husson’s Eagles with two singles and two RBIs. Nick Arthers of Belfast hit a two-run single.

Saint Joseph’s gets Sunday split

At Standish, the Saint Joseph’s Monks outhit Castleton State in both games Sunday, but only managed a split of the doubleheader, winning 7-4 in the first game and losing the second 14-1.

In the first game, Luke Enman had a triple, a single, and an RBI to pace the Monks.

Travis Bass had two singles for Castleton State’s Spartans.

In the second game, Bass had a double, two singles, a stolen base and four RBIs to lead a 13-hit attack.

Wade Oliver doubled as the Saint Joseph’s Monks had just four hits.

Bowdoin sweeps Bates

At Lewiston, Bowdoin College swept a weekend series with Bates to clinch a second consecutive bid to the NESCAC baseball tournament.

On Sunday, K.J. Kozens got an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give Bowdoin a 5-4 win.

On Saturday, Bowdoin’s Joe Berte went 6-for-7 with six singles and three RBIs to lead the Polar Bears to 8-7 and 7-5 wins.

On Sunday, Bates took an early lead with a run off Bowdoin starter Luke Potter in the first inning. The Polar Bears replied in the top of the second, scoring on K.J. Kozen’s single that brought home John Lawrie to tie the contest. Bowdoin scored twice in the fifth as Marc Dallaire slapped an RBI single and later came home on a passed ball to give the Polar Bears a 3-1 lead. Bates was able to tie the game again with a pair of unearned runs in the seventh and traded runs in the eighth inning, sending the game into the ninth tied at 4-4.

In Saturday’s first game, the Polar Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally by the Bobcats.

Patrick Duchette and Jon Koperniak each had two singles for Bowdoin.

For Bates, Rob Patton had three singles and two RBIs. Denis Hogan had three singles and an RBI while Alex Egelson added a double, a single and an RBI.

In the second game, John Lawrie had three singles for Bowdoin, which led all the way.

Egelson led Bates with a solo home run and two singles.

Keene State sweeps USM

At Keene, N.H., Keene State rallied in the ninth inning of both games to pull out a pair of 3-2 wins over the University of Southern Maine in a doubleheader on Saturday.

In the first game, Ryan Bourque had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Huskies while Chris Burleson added an RBI double.

In the second game, Burleson had a pair of singles while Max Arsenault and Andrew Stacy each drove in a run for Southern Maine.

At Waterville, Steve Ragonese hit two two-run home runs in the second game of a Saturday doubleheader as Tufts defeated Colby 9-2. The Mules lost the first game 5-1.

In the second game, Tom Salemy had two hits including two-run home run for the Mules.
