ORONO – The University of Maine will hold a ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 6, between Nutting and Hitchner halls to honor the memory of David Veverka, a former student who was killed in Iraq last year while serving with the Maine Army National Guard.
The event will include a tree planting and the unveiling of a memorial.
Veverka was a senior studying wildlife ecology when he was deployed as part of Company B 3rd Battalion, 172nd Mountain Infantry Division.
At UM he was president of the student chapter of the Society for Conservation Biology, vice president of the Wildlife Society student chapter.
He will be awarded a posthumous degree at the university’s coming commencement.
