Bell rings up hits as Eagles roll on Husson eliminates Castleton State

BANGOR – Shawna Bell homered, tripled, and singled to lead the Husson College softball team to a 10-5 victory over Castleton State in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal Tuesday.

Bell finished with three RBIs.

Husson advances to the double-elimination round, which begins Friday. The remaining four teams will be reseeded and the tourney will be held at the highest remaining seed. The tourney continues Saturday and Sunday.

Cassie Berry had two singles and two RBIs for Husson, and Jenny Rollins had two singles and three RBIs.

Hilary Bemis singled three times to drive in three runs for Castleton State.

UM-Farmington 9, Lesley 8

At Farmington, Kelly McDonough scored the winning run in the ninth inning after a Holly Tripp ground ball was mishandled to lead the University of Maine at Farmington in the North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal contest.

Sarah Defilipp pitched all nine innings to earn the win for UM-Farmington. Alix Raymond hit an RBI double, and Tripp and Megan McCrum added RBI singles.

Lasell 3, MMA 1

At Newton, Mass., Tiffany Perla hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to break a 1-1 tie and lift Lasell by Maine Maritime Academy in a North Atlantic Conference quarterfinal.

Elms 7, Thomas 2

At Chicopee, Mass., Christina Giampetruz singled and drove in two runs to lead Elms past Thomas in a North Atlantic Conference tournament quarterfinal.

Elms advances to the double-elimination round to play Lasell. Thomas is eliminated.

Kristy Clements and Nikki Smith both singled, knocked in a run, and stole a base for the Terriers of Waterville.

Bowdoin 9, Bates 3

At Lewiston, Clare Ronan hit a two-run double as part of a seven-run sixth inning as Bowdoin topped Bates.

Lauren Coven had three hits and an RBI while Jessica Paris and Ronan each had two hits and two RBIs for Bowdoin.

Katie Franklin had three hits for Bates while Liz Stahler added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Thomas 12, Colby 8

At Waterville, Matt Pavlis racked up four hits, knocked in two runs and scored three more as Thomas College defeated crosstown rival Colby College.

Tom Salemy paced the White Mules with four hits, including a home run and two RBIs.

Bowdoin 5, Southern Maine 1

At Brunswick, Patrick Duchette and Mike Buckley each had two singles and two RBIs to lift Bowdoin over the University of Southern Maine.

Joe Pace allowed one run on seven hits and four walks while striking out two for Bowdoin. Joe Berte had a double and two runs scored, and Nick Lawler doubled.

Ryan Bourque had two singles and an RBI for the Huskies of Gorham. Andrew Stacy and Joe McGhee had two singles apiece.

UMF, Bates split

At Farmington, the University of Maine-Farmington Beavers jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the opener of a doubleheader and held on for a 6-5 win over Bates.

Bates defeated UMF in the second game 13-3.

In the second game, UMF built an early 3-2 lead, but Bates responded with 11 unanswered runs for the victory.
