BUCKSPORT – Chris Maguire’s versatility on the baseball diamond isn’t confined to being a top-flight infielder and one of the better pitchers in Eastern Maine.

He also shows it with how he swings the bat.

Three days after hitting a seventh-inning home run to give Bucksport a one-run victory at Mount Desert Island, Maguire went the opposite way for an RBI double in the fifth inning Tuesday to deliver the winning run as the Golden Bucks edged John Bapst of Bangor 3-2.

“That’s two games in a row Chris has come up with the big hit,” said Bucksport coach Tiger Stewart. “Everyone knows he’s very capable, but I’ll tell you having [cleanup hitter] Cam Wadleigh behind him helps, because you can’t really pitch around him because Cam’s swinging the bat pretty well, too.”

The win was the fourth straight for the defending Eastern Maine Class B champions, now 4-1 on the spring.

John Bapst, which is expected to be one of the Golden Bucks’ chief rivals for regional supremacy, is 2-1 after being on a field for a game or practice for just the fourth time this spring Monday due to inclement weather or lack of field availability.

“It’s just a matter of seeing live pitching and being out on fields and getting reps,” said John Bapst coach Shane Graham. “Hopefully we’ll catch up, but Bucksport’s a measuring stick in Class B.”

With the game tied at 2-2, Eddie Robbins led off the Bucksport fifth with an opposite-field single to right. Maguire then followed Robbins’ lead, going deep to right-center with an opposite-field shot. While Maguire was cut down trying to stretch the hit into a triple, Robbins scored easily with the go-ahead run.

“I was thinking of trying to pull the ball, but there was so much wind blowing this way that I thought going the other way would be more effective,” Maguire said. “I just sat back and hit the ball where it was pitched.”

Maguire made that lead stand up by finishing off a four-hitter on the mound. The righthander struggled with his control early but retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.

“At the beginning I didn’t feel like I had my best stuff, but we were still making the plays and I was making the pitches when I needed them,” said Maguire. “Toward the end I felt a lot better with my curveball and had more confidence in my off-speed pitches.”

Maguire struck out nine and walked five to earn his second win of the spring. Aaron Healey worked 4 1/3 innings for Bapst before being relieved by Kyle Gallant, who retired all five batters he faced.

Bucksport took a 2-0 lead in the second on RBI singles by Steve Klenowski and Teddy Cooke.

John Bapst tied the game in the third. Brock Bragdon and Casey Hull hit back-to-back doubles for one run before Hull went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk.

Wadleigh had two of Bucksport’s six hits, both singles. Hull and Bragdon accounted for all of John Bapst’s hits with a double and single each.
