Contestants sought for pageants in LaGrange

Judging from the mail I’ve received from Jen Baker, it appears members of the LaGrange Fire Department and the LaGrange Veterans Memorial committee are busy.

Baker wrote that, in addition to other upcoming activities, these organizations are hosting their first annual Little Miss and Miss LaGrange Pageant at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the Masonic Hall in LaGrange.

Contestants in grade five and under will compete for Little Miss LaGrange, and those in grade six and up for Miss LaGrange.

The pageant is open to any girl 18 or younger, from any area community. The registration fee is $10, and the registration deadline is Saturday, May 19.

Baker reports the pageant includes a written volunteer service requirement. Contestants also will be judged on a talent of their choice and an evening gown competition.

Contestants must submit a photograph and brief paragraph about themselves for the pageant booklet; all contestants will ride on a float for the LaGrange Days Parade in July; and the winner of each group will serve as grand marshals for the parade.

Information and a registration form can be obtained by calling Baker at 943-2402 or e-mailing jrbaker@surfmk.com.

Registration is still open for anyone wishing to attend a Community Conference on Domestic and Sexual Violence 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 8, at I Care Ministries, 45 Spring St. in Millinocket.

The conference is sponsored by Spruce Run Association and Rape Response Services, with support from Millinocket Regional Hospital, the Millinocket police and fire departments, and Penquis Community Action Program.

RRS director Kim Roberts-Fer reports that Maine Attorney General Steven Rowe will deliver the keynote address at this important conference.

Presenters include gender violence prevention trainer and educator Daryl Fort; Dr. Eric Brown, a founder of the Penobscot County Domestic Abuse Task Force; and John Rogers, director of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy.

The cost is $10, scholarships are available and more information can be obtained by calling RRS at 945-5102.

Bob Pentland invites you to enjoy the delightful music of the historic Bangor Band at its annual spring concert, 3 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor.

This “free, family oriented event,” Pentland wrote, features music that includes “marches, big band swing, light classics and show tunes.”

As a reminder, our Bangor Band is believed to be this country’s second oldest community band.

Participation qualifies youngsters for their Camp Bangor scholarships by meeting the program’s community service requirement.

At each site, team leaders will have garbage bags, gloves and directions.
