VESTAL, N.Y. – The University of Maine softball team closed out its season by taking two of three games from Binghamton over the weekend.

The Black Bears swept Saturday’s doubleheader 8-1 and 5-2 but dropped Sunday’s single game 5-4 and were eliminated from the America East postseason picture.

In Saturday’s first game, Whitney Spangler tripled, singled and drove in two runs to spark Maine. She had an RBI single in the fifth inning, during which Kate Joseph hit an RBI double. Christine McGivney earned the win with eight strikeouts. Christina Quijano doubled and singled for the Bearcats.

In Saturday’s second game, Tara Vilardo and Beth Foltz each recorded three hits for the Black Bears. Ashley Waters had an RBI single and Jenna Balent fanned seven for the victory. Binghamton’s Liz Sequeria singled twice.

In Sunday’s game, Maine scored three runs in the top of the seventh but couldn’t come back for the win. Vilardo and Alexis Souhlaris each singled twice while Kristie Hawkins doubled and drove in a run. Quijano hit two singles.

Beavers knocked from tourney

At Newton, Mass., Saturday, Lasell pitcher Emily Slader limited UMaine-Farmington to three hits, beating the Beavers 3-1 and knocking them out of the double-elimination North Atlantic Conference tournament. Earlier Saturday, Elms beat UMF 7-6 to drop the Beavers to the losers’ bracket.

Elms went on to beat Lasell 4-2 Sunday for the NAC title and an NCAA Division III tourney berth.

In the first game, Elms scored five runs in the fourth to take control. Ally Graffum led the Blazers with two RBIs and two singles. UMF’s Megan Goodrow hit a double and two singles to drive in three runs, while Erin Porter and Sarah Defilipp each singled twice.

In the second game, Heather Rose, Jayme Rautenberg and Shawna Kelly each singled twice for Lasell. Kelly McDonough led the Beavers with a single and an RBI.

Baseball

USM sweeps UMass Dartmouth

At Gorham Saturday, Eddie Skeffington and Pat Kinslow doubled and singled to knock in a run and power Southern Maine past UMass Dartmouth 7-2 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Huskies also won the second game 5-0.

The Huskies finish their regular season at 25-13 and 8-6 in Little East Conference play and earned the No. 3 seed for the league tournament, which begins Wednesday in Mansfield, Conn.

In the first game, Nick Vardaro doubled for Southern Maine.

Joe Albano tripled and singled for UMass Dartmouth.

In the second game, Ryan Bourque singled three times to pace the Huskies. Max Arsenault drove in two runs and Kinslow singled twice.

Middlebury sweeps Bates

At Middlebury, Vt., Sunday, John Lanahan doubled and homered to drive in three runs and lead Middlebury past Bates of Lewiston 10-5 in the second game of a doubleheader. Middlebury won the first game 12-1.

In the first game, Sam Timberg hit a home run and a single to pace Middlebury. Brian Buckley hit two singles for Bates and Alex Egelson doubled.

In the second game, Timberg homered and doubled with two RBIs for Middlebury.

Denis Hogan doubled and singled for Bates. Buckley singled twice and Tyler Maxwell doubled to drive in a run.
