Troop Greeter chief honored for patriotism

MILO – William Knight, the head of the Maine Troop Greeters, was recognized Thursday by the Joseph P. Chaisson Post 41 of the American Legion.

Knight was presented the American Legion Americanism medal by Commander Randall Kluj. The Legion also presented a similar award to the Maine Troop Greeters.

Kluj, in his recognition of Knight, cited the late Adlai Stevenson, who was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in the early 1960s. Stevenson likened patriotism to a tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.

“This type of lifetime dedication and sense of personal obligation describes the tireless efforts … Bill Knight put forth to honor our troops, thus defining the true sense of Americanism and patriotism,” said Kluj, whose son is a military pilot engaged in Iraq.

Knight, who avails himself at all hours to greet troops at Bangor International Airport, has greeted more than 2,342 flights involving 462,289 troops and 54 dogs, according to Kluj.

“Americanism is a vital, active, living force perpetuating a love of America and her ideals,” Kluj told those gathered Thursday. “A patriot is someone who loves, supports, and is prepared to serve their country. Bill Knight is the epitome of both Americanism and patriotism,” he said.

Kluj also honored the Maine Troop Greeters, who, he said, have upheld the values and beliefs as mirrored by the American Legion.
