Art gallery to host ‘Once in a Blue Moon’ celebration

HOULTON – Officials at the Blue Moon Gallery know that a true blue moon only occurs once in a great while.

So why not, they reasoned, give area artists the chance to show off their artwork in a real gallery during that unique time?

A blue moon – which is a rarity – is the second full moon in a calendar month. The first full moon took place last week, and the second is scheduled to occur on Thursday, May 31.

To commemorate the event, the Blue Moon Gallery will be hosting a “Once in a Blue Moon Celebration” starting at 6 p.m. that evening.

During the event, organizers are inviting artists of all skill levels to bring one of their masterpieces to the gallery to be displayed. It must be securely framed or mounted to be hung on the wall or be or able to sit on a table.

“It’s just a crazy little party we’re having to celebrate the blue moon,” Audrey Zimmerman, who sits on the Southern Aroostook Cultural Arts Project’s advisory board, said Monday. “Anyone can bring in art they’ve done and have it hang in the gallery throughout the weekend.”

The gallery is located inside Visions, which is owned by SACAP, in downtown Market Square. The Main Street studio features a new art exhibit nearly every month.

During the event, the gallery also will be the site of a potluck supper and musicians will be on hand to entertain revelers.

“We’re just encouraging anyone to bring in their work, ready to hang up,” Zimmerman said. “We’ll give them a hammer and a nail to hang it up right then or we can display it on a pedestal if we have one. We want everyone to come out and participate … it’s a chance that comes along only once in a blue moon.”

All items must have the artist’s name, address and phone number. SACAP reserves the right of final approval of work to be exhibited.
