Architectural staff

BANGOR – Stephen E. Pedersen has joined the Education Studio at WBRC Architects-Engineers. Specializing in architecture for schools, he has more than 25 years of experience on educational, commercial and institutional projects.

He has managed offices in California and Maine and is a licensed architect in both states.

Pedersen has been an active member of the American Institute of Architects and served as president of the Ventura County chapter in California.

Since joining WBRC, Pedersen’s project work has included the Peninsula School in Gouldsboro and the Brewer elementary school.

Safety award

BANGOR – The Northeast Lumber Manufacturers Association has given top honors to Hammond Lumber Co. It received first place in Division 2 for Combined Operations – sawmill and planer mill – for 2006 at a special ceremony on March 30 in Boston. The award recognizes outstanding safety achievement in the 25,001-50,000-man-hour category for mills in New England, New York and Pennsylvania.

Hammond Lumber Co., one of Maine’s largest independent retail building suppliers, has run the mills in Belgrade since 1953. In the subsequent 54 years of continuous milling operation, the company seldom has had a lost-time accident and has won numerous safety awards.

In 1985, Hammond Lumber Co. established a safety committee that meets monthly to identify and correct potential health and safety hazards.

In addition, the Hammond sawmill has been recognized for its “whole log” approach to milling. Nothing from the log goes to waste.

“It’s important to us not to waste anything,” said company president Donald Hammond. “There are only so many trees, so we don’t want to use more than we need to. Also, all the wood lots we buy from are within 60 miles of here. We know who’s doing the cutting and how they’re treating the woods.”

Animal behavior training

BANGOR – Don Hanson, co-owner and director of behavior counseling and training at Green Acres Kennel Shop, recently completed 10 days of continuing education at the Natural Animal Centre in Carmarthen, Wales.

Classes focused on the advanced level use of Bach Flower Remedies for treating animals with behavioral and emotional issues and teaching pet guardians and professionals.

Hanson also attended the two-day International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants conference in Cleveland. Topics included the latest research on canine learning and cognition, psychopharmacology and treating animal behavior problems, working with fearful shelter dogs, environmental enrichment for cats and medical conditions that can affect cat behavior.

Real estate agent

BUCKSPORT – Harvey Reed of Bucksport has joined RE/MAX Advantage Realty Group. He will specialize in residential and commercial properties while working with Paul Hansen, a RE/MAX broker.

Reed brings 35 years of sales and customer service experience to his new position. Previously, he was the owner and operator of a retail fuel business and a heating and air conditioning installation business. For the past six years he has worked in the plumbing department at Home Depot in Ellsworth.
