MILO – There was no doubt the Central of Corinth softball team would play Penquis Wednesday afternoon.
As of Wednesday morning, however, Red Devils coach Durice Washburn wasn’t sure which of her players would be available.
Three Central players went to the emergency room Tuesday for unrelated issues. Only one was related to softball – pitcher Hilary Haney took a ball off her forehead during practice. The other two, third baseman Kara Voisine and right fielder Janalee Hanson, went for undisclosed reasons.
“I went to school today not knowing if I had enough kids to go,” a relieved Washburn said.
But all three played Wednesday against Penquis, and Haney had a fine outing despite the red scar above her right eyebrow.
She tossed a two-hitter and got offensive help from Chantel Randall, who clobbered a double and a home run, while reaching base two other times, as the Red Devils earned a 9-2 win over the Patriots at Harris Field.
Central beat Penquis 9-7 on April 28.
Haney retired the first seven batters she faced but struggled with walks in the middle innings.
Washburn had a conference with Haney after she gave up a one-out walk in the fifth. Haney walked one more after the visit but then struck out a batter looking and got a groundout to end the inning.
“She came out to give me a breather and that helped me get back into the swing of things,” Haney said.
Washburn said Haney was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center after she was hit by a throw from catcher Randall that glanced off Haney’s glove. Haney passed out briefly so an ambulance was called just in case. Washburn said Haney didn’t have a concussion.
Randall, meanwhile, sparked the offense with an RBI double in the first inning. She reached on errors in the third and fifth and in the seventh smacked a line-drive home run to left field. The homer also plated Haney, who had walked.
Central’s Kristie Collins hit an RBI single in the first inning and Jocelyn Portmann drove in a run on a groundout in the sixth. Erica Brownell singled and scored two runs.
Central (5-2) took advantage of defensive miscues by the young Patriots (4-4).
“We’re getting better at that,” Randall said. “At the beginning of the season we were a little shaky but now we’re picking up on those things and doing better as a team. We strung a lot of hits together and everybody played their part.”
Penquis had to deal with an injury issue of its own. Catcher Britnee Genther took an Erica Lyford pitch off her right wrist in the fifth inning and was replaced by right fielder Shelby Fowles, who had never caught at the high school level.
“With our catcher getting hurt, that affects us,” Penquis coach Rachel Larlee said. “We had to move around a lot of people. The kids did the best they could. The girls work really, really hard. We’re limited in numbers but they still work hard.”
Fowles held up well and the Patriots managed to score two runs in the seventh. Annie Karnes led off with a walk and two outs later Amber Benoit singled to drive in Karnes. Benoit scored on a throwing error.
