Winterport groups to hold steeple fundraiser

Anyone driving through Winterport on a regular basis can keep an eye on the progress of the restoration work being done on the Winterport Union Meeting House, which was built in 1834.

May Pardy reminds you, however, that while the work has begun, “there is more to be done yet.”

And that is one reason members of many local organizations hope you will attend their SOS – Save Our Steeple – supper and raffle from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Leroy Smith School on Main Street in Winterport.

Admission is just $5, and free for children under 6.

Hosted by the Winterport Fire and Rescue Association, Winterport Woman’s Club and several other Winterport organizations, Pardy wrote that she hopes this event, which features delicious food, raffles and prizes, “will be a big fundraiser” for the Meeting House restoration effort.

For those unfamiliar with the Meeting House history, Pardy wants you to know that “our steeple houses a Revere bell,” and that it was back in the mid-1970s that “a group of concerned citizens formed a corporation to work toward preservation and restoration of this fine building.”

Brenda Hall of Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor reports the hospital’s Spring Health Fair is 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the gymnasium of Mount Desert Island High School.

The free event is open to the public “and will showcase many hospital services as well as those of local, regional, state and national organizations,” she wrote.

Free health screenings, information, demonstrations and nutritious refreshments also will be available.

Andrew Farnham of the Katahdin Area Council of Boy Scouts of America reminds all Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and their families that the council’s annual Spring Fling begins with registration at 9 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Camp Roosevelt on Route 46 in East Eddington. A picnic lunch is planned for noon.

Farnham describes the event as “a hands-on sampler of the many outdoor activities Scouting and Camp Roosevelt have to offer,” and he wants Cubs and Scouts in grades four to six who attend to “bring a friend who isn’t in Scouting.”

Activities include everything from soccer to climbing and kite flying.

“If you would like to attend but aren’t a Scout and don’t know one,” Farnham added, call Tim Archer at the council office, 866-2241 or (800) 353-5888.

For the Maine Association of Independent Doulas, Evelyn Conrad invites new mothers and mothers-to-be to celebrate International Doula Month from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Isaac Farrar Mansion on Union Street in Bangor.

Lucille Koncinsky of Levant wrote that “The Curious for a Cure” team, which participates annually in the Old Town American Cancer Society Relay for Life event, will hold a carwash fundraiser 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at Broadway Exxon in Bangor.

This team first participated in 2000 when the late Brianna Koncinsky, then in kindergarten, was named honorary chairman of the event. While “that would be Brianna’s one and only relay,” her grandmother added, “the team is committed to continuing her work.”

Julie Veilleux, president of the new Bar Harbor Merchant’s Association, invites you to its first annual Community Sale’bration Street Sale 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, May 12, on Main, Cottage and Mount Desert streets and Kennebec Place, where you will find more than 40 tables set up for perusing.

The 65-member (and growing) organization, Veilleux wrote, is “working to break the misconception that Bar Harbor is all boarded up during the off-season months of November through April.”

The rain date is Saturday, May 19.

Johnna Lacey of the Bangor Symphony Orchestra reports tickets are available for the BSO’s annual Youth Concert Series.

The two programs are 11:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Monday, May 14, at Maine Center for the Arts in Orono.

Featuring “music from the land of the midnight sun and beyond,” a video montage of the aurora borealis will be displayed on stage, Lacey reports.
