Y-Players to present one of ‘best shows ever’

You’ve been waiting for this, and here it is: Director Pam Martin announces the 19th year of The Y-Players Present, “Broadway the Y-Player Way.”

Including “A Love Letter from Our Hearts to Yours,” the plays will be performed at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 15; 7 p.m. Friday, May 18; 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20; 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29; 7 p.m. Friday, June 1, and 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, all at the Bangor Y on Second Street.

Admission is by donation.

Proclaiming the Players’ enjoyment, Martin reports that this activity “gets better and better.”

She also reports that you’ll get a kick out of seeing “the original ‘Von Trapp’ children,” who have “opened a Swiss pretzel factory” and are doing well; “a twist on West Side Story’s ‘I Feel Pretty;'” the “girls” as bag ladies; and lots of other surprises.

The second part of the program features love songs of the 1930s and ’40s, and from Broadway shows that you have come to know and love, she wrote.

Last year, your generous donations raised nearly $3,000 for Y senior programs and the Encore Program, Martin stated.

And, she proudly states, “I love these ladies; I love my Y; and I love the idea we have one of the best shows ever for you this year!”

Laura Mitchell of United Way of Eastern Maine in Bangor reminds you that the 15th annual National Association of Letter Carriers National Food Drive is Saturday, May 12.

You are asked to leave nonperishable food items in a bag at your mailbox or for your letter carrier.

Mitchell explained that letter carriers, food pantry representatives and volunteers then will “distribute the food to local food pantries to help alleviate hunger in eastern Maine.”

However, she added, in order for that distribution to go smoothly, members of NALC and UWEM need people “to help load, unload and sort food the day of the drive.”

If you can volunteer, call Jessica Richards at 941-2800, ext. 220, or e-mail le@unitedwayem.org.

More information also is available by searching NALC Food Drive on www.volunteersolutions.org.

Rain or shine, admission is free for the Center Drive School Parent-Teacher Group Spring Fair 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the school.

Sue Pate reports that proceeds of the annual fair “help fund the many projects” supported by this group.

“These include class trips, classroom supplies and equipment, books, playground equipment, authors’ and artists’ visits, plays and so much more.”

You will find everything from a cow-milking contest (not with real cows, Pate added) plus everything from collectibles to food and demonstrations.

On behalf of members of St. James’ Episcopal Church, Paula Baines has a special Mother’s Day request of our readers.

Baines asks that you offer to help parents of babies and young children who “are struggling, in our communities, to meet the needs of their families” by donating baby necessities on Mother’s Day.

St. James’ Episcopal Church “is sponsoring a baby shower for Crossroads Ministries immediately after the 10 a.m. Eucharist,” on Sunday, May 13, in the undercroft of the church at the corner of Center and Main streets in Old Town.

This is the second year church members are conducting this drive “to help Crossroads Ministries and area Moms,” Baines wrote of the ecumenical food pantry founded in 1991 by Brenda Davis and serving “families in Old Town, Orono, Milford, Bradley and other surrounding towns.”

Suggested donations include diapers, infant cereal, formula, baby wipes, lotion, powder and baby shampoo.

For more information, call Baines at 947-0087 or e-mail prbaines@yahoo.com.

As part of the Sturge-Weber Foundation National Month of Awareness during May, members are hosting events and conducting campaigns to make people aware of this condition that is best known as “port wine stain,” according to Nicolle Philbrook of Winterport. Her 3-year-old daughter was born with this condition.

To meet others who have the syndrome, or who have family members with port wine stain, and to educate the public about this condition, Philbrook has organized two events.

First is Dress Down Day, Tuesday, May 15, when area businesses, schools and community organizations have been asked to raise funds for the organization.

The second is an awareness luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, at Oriental Jade Restaurant in Bangor.

People who collect $100 in donations receive a free lunch, and reservations are required. More information can be obtained by calling Philbrook at 223-4780.
