Estes’ two-run double sparks Witches Jordan McLain records four-hitter to help Brewer edge rival Bangor 2-1

BREWER – The big bats in the top of the Brewer High softball team’s batting order were quiet in Friday evening’s game at Coffin Field. That meant the bottom of the lineup had to produce.

Sarah Estes, the Witches’ No. 7 hitter, smacked a double to deep center field in the second inning to drive in two runs in a 2-1 victory over the rival Rams.

Brewer also got another fine outing from pitcher Jordan McLain, who struck out eight and scattered four hits.

McLain and Estes, both seniors, will also end their careers knowing they had the final regular-season win in the rivalry.

“It feels great,” Estes said. “It was a really good team effort and that’s always helpful.”

The Witches (7-2) gained some revenge for a 2-0 loss to the Rams (7-3) on April 20.

“This game was going to be, who flinches first,” Bangor coach Don Stanhope said.

The matchup between Brewer’s Jordan McLain and Bangor’s Tawnya Godinez was a wash as both No. 4 hitters went 0-for-3. Neither team’s top offensive players did much, although Brewer’s No. 2 hitter, Dominique Defilipp, tripled in the first.

That left things to the lighter-hitting players, but it’s a position in which the Witches feel comfortable.

“We have a really deep team and that’s one thing we’ve done well with this year,” Estes said. “If we have one of our starters down we’re still pretty deep and we’re all confident in each other.”

Although Estes had the big hit to drive in both runs, the Witches had to scratch to get the baserunners on in the first place.

Leah Jackson reached first on a fielding error and then went to second on a wild pitch. Julie Lorenz followed with a flare to shallow right, allowing Jackson to get to third.

Estes then cranked her double to plate both runners and give the Witches a 2-0 lead.

“It was right down the middle, a fastball,” she said. “[The hit] was a good connection.”

It looked as if McLain was going to get a shutout but Bangor No. 9 Amy Wadleigh hit a two-out infield single in the seventh.

“When you have two teams like this, the bottoms of the order aren’t the same as other teams’ bottom of the order,” Stanhope said. “There are some pretty good athletes down there.”

Pinch-runner Nicole Stairs stole second before Emily Heath hit a fly ball that the defense was unable to field.

The Witches threw the ball around trying to get Heath out, which allowed Stairs to score and Heath to move to second. First baseman Estes recorded the final out of the game, catching a fly ball in foul territory.

The Rams managed just two hits until the seventh. Godinez twice came up with runners on base.

“I wasn’t really worried about it,” McLain said. “Even if she had gotten a hit, we were up by two [runs]. I was feeling really confident in all my pitches and in the team behind me.”

Bangor’s Sam Besse pitched well in the loss. She allowed four hits, walked two and struck out two in four innings.
