BANGOR – A man released on bail Friday morning after being charged with two burglaries was back in a jail cell 15 hours later when police said he broke windows in two downtown storefronts and fled with nearly $7,000 in jewelry.
Edward W. Turner, 23, of Hermon remained jailed Sunday on new charges of burglary, criminal mischief and violation of conditions of release. He also faces charges in connection with two burglaries last week in Levant.
Turner, who told police he is in a methadone treatment program, is expected to appear today in 3rd District Court on the new charges.
Bangor police arrested Turner about 8:45 p.m. Friday near the Bank of America building on Exchange Street after he was seen running across State Street carrying a backpack.
Inside it, officers found numerous pieces of jewelry still on black display boards with price tags attached, according to police reports.
Turner allegedly broke the window at Frati’s Pawn Shop, 55 State St., but could not get into the store. Then he crossed the street and walked to Downeast Coins & Collectibles, 26 State St., where he smashed the window and snatched the jewelry, according to police reports.
It was the second time in 24 hours that Turner was arrested on burglary charges.
He and Donald Searway, 20, of Hermon were arrested late Thursday after police recovered stolen firearms and jewelry from their car and home.
The arrests stemmed from two burglaries reported in Levant between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Maine State Police Trooper Paul White said firearms, jewelry, clothing and other items were taken from the homes in both burglaries.
Penobscot County sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle in Hermon for erratic operation and found a shotgun believed to have been taken during the burglaries.
“The homeowner positively identified one weapon and some jewelry,” White said Friday.
Police then searched the home Turner and Searway share.
“We found another stolen weapon, jewelry and safe from both residences,” White said.
Both men were charged with two counts of burglary. Turner also was charged with operating after suspension.
Searway also remained at the Penobscot County Jail on Sunday, unable to make bail on the charges stemming from the Levant break-ins.
