Newport board to meet despite court ruling

NEWPORT – Despite a court ruling last month that puts its actions in limbo, the Newport Board of Selectmen will meet Wednesday to handle several licenses and permits.

Newport was one of dozens of towns affected by a Maine supreme court ruling April 26 that boards and councils with an existing vacancy had no authority to act.

The Maine Municipal Association has advised communities with vacancies to fill those slots as soon as possible and, meanwhile, to handle as little business as they can.

Newport has an election scheduled for June 12, but no one has taken out nomination papers for the vacant selectman’s seat.

Town Manager James Ricker was out of the office Friday and could not be reached over the weekend for comment. Chairman Al Worden did not return a call for information.

Meanwhile, the association is attempting to secure emergency legislation to fix the problem.

Newport’s agenda consists of discussions regarding transfer station maintenance and the comprehensive plan rewrite, as well as public hearings on a liquor license renewal, pawn broker’s license renewal and renewals of games of chance permits for beano and bingo.

The town office roof replacement and a review of the Time-Warner Cable contract are also on the agenda.

The meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the town office.
