White’s strategy pays off Driver cruises to win at Speedway 95

HERMON – Corinna’s Paul White knew he had a good race car. So he waited for the right time to forge to the front and then he never looked back.

White passed Winterport’s Ryan Deane on the slower inside groove on a lap 26 restart and cruised to a 25 car-length victory over Deane in the 50-lap Pro Stock feature at Speedway 95 Sunday afternoon.

“The car was really awesome today. You couldn’t ask for a better car, on top or on the bottom [groove],” said White. “It stayed the same all day. And as soon as we got out front, we just left [the rest of the field]. It was pretty easy going after that.”

White said they made a few small changes on the car between the heat race and the feature.

“We changed the sway bar and a spring. It got better all day,” said White, who started fifth.

Deane, who had the pole, said his car was “really good at the beginning and then it started getting really loose on me. The car was so loose, we couldn’t fend [White] off. Paul is always quick. We just had to hold on to what we could get. ”

Carmel’s Jesse Smith finished third with Hermon’s Dale Swoboda and Glenburn’s Douglas Day winding up fourth and fifth, respectively.

“We had a pretty good car,” said Smith, who has also been the crew chief for his father, Pro Stock racer Gary Smith of Bangor, for several years. “The car is definitely a lot better than the driver right now. We’ve only got six or seven races under our belt.”

Smith said White clearly had a top-notch car.

“Paul was real good. He had a stout car on the bottom [groove],” said Smith.

Town Hill’s John Phippen Jr., who started on the outside pole, led for several early laps before dropping back and then spinning out on lap 25.

In the 50-lap Limiteds feature, Steuben’s Brent Parritt started on the outside pole, took the lead on the first lap and never looked back en route to a comfortable victory.

“[My motor blew] last week and I borrowed one from Randy Caler for this week,” said Parritt. “It was a Super Street motor but it worked. My brother, Wayne, worked on it last night and we did the setup for it. It worked out pretty good. I was glad to get the win.”

Parritt had to survive some restarts caused by cautions but his car didn’t have any trouble pulling away.

“He’s always dialed in,” said Steuben’s Rowland Robinson Sr., who finished second. “I’ll take a second. Our car was better at the end of the race. It wasn’t very good at first.”

Winterport’s Fred Brown was third with Unity’s Frank Moulton and Trenton’s Stephen Swanson completing the top five.

Brown said he was satisfied with his third-place finish.

“I’d like to have won but I guess I’m happy. The car is still in one piece and so I don’t have to work on it all week,” said Brown. “I don’t know what ails my car. I’ve done something to it I shouldn’t have, I guess.”

Liberty’s Dave St. Clair and Bradley’s Deane Smart had fast cars in the early going but both developed car problems during the race.

St. Clair spent several laps in the pits and Smart’s engine blew on lap 38.

In the 50-lap Super Street feature, Joe Legere started on the outside pole, took the lead early and pulled away for a 20 car-length victory.

John Kalel II of Orrington nipped Holden’s Steve Moulton by a few feet to claim second. Hudson’s Keith Peirce was fourth with Orrington’s John Carter taking home fifth.

The best race of the day saw Shawn Sperrey of Hermon and Jim Carr Jr. of Clifton come down the home stretch side by side with Sperry crossing the finish line half a car-length ahead of Carr in the Strictly Street feature.

Rounding out the top five were Corinna’s Sam Whitmore, Lamoine’s Derek Mingo and Steuben’s Rowland Robinson Jr.

In the Sport-Four feature, Dixmont’s Lewis Batchelder won for the second straight week. He finished five car-lengths ahead of Hampden’s David Green.

Medford’s Adam Russell was third, Belfast’s Spencer Garvin was fourth and Winterport’s Dan Quilia Sr. was fifth.
