Powers, Hutchins lift Mariners by Cougars

BREWER – Anika Powers doubled in a run and Erica Hutchins added a fielder’s choice RBI as visiting Deer Isle-Stonington plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning to score a 16-15 upset of Katahdin of Stacyville in high school softball action Monday.

Powers added three singles, and Shana Weeks led Deer Isle-Stonington with three singles, a double and four RBIs. Goldie Garcia had two singles, a double and three RBIs.

Melissa Duffy and Ronni Robinson paced the Cougars with two singles and two RBIs apiece. Alicia Moore added a triple and an RBI single.

Bethany Grant notched four singles, and Jenna Beal and Erin Brooks added three hits apiece for the Knights.

Kelsey Daoust hit a solo home run for East Grand and Jackie Dodge and Courtney Lloyd each added two singles and an RBI. Ashlee Kendall chipped in with a double and two RBIs.

At Machias, Steph Perry tossed a no-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks, and helped her own cause with two doubles, a single and three RBIs as the Blue Devils picked up their 10th win.

Lindsey Mingo singled and hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Emily Wilkinson drove in three runs on two singles and Tessa Clark added a single, a double and two RBIs.

Higgins drove in three runs.

Hollie Stanwood had three singles and a pair of RBIs for the winners and Ashley Pennartz had two base hits and an RBI.

Vanessa Leture had two singles for Orono and Jessica Bates had the other hit, a single.

At Belfast, Stephanie Whittier fired a two-hitter in posting her first shutout of the season, striking out five and walking one, and Jillian Ross doubled home the winning run in a decisive three-run sixth inning that gave Belfast the win.

Liz Brown and Helen Berry had RBI singles later in the sixth.

Ross doubled and singled for the winners while Paige Gardiner and Jess Boucher singled for Waterville and Paige Gardiner tossed a six-hitter.

At Danforth, Mike Cummings had four singles and scored four times to spark a 13-hit attack that powered Shead of Eastport past East Grand.

Aaron Sullivan’s two-run double keyed a three-run third inning that broke a 5-5 tie.

Sullivan also had a single. Chris Newman had two singles and two RBIs, Jake Kilton tripled and doubled and Justin Lewey singled twice and scored four times for the winners.

Ricky Parks had three singles and three RBIs for East Grand and Abe Brittain singled twice and had an RBI.

Jacob Stevens gave Machias the victory with a steal of home plate.

John Deacon had a pair of RBI doubles for Calais. Scott Geel had two doubles and Jordan Leeman a double and a single.
