According to Rich Kimball, the Brewer Youth Theater’s next production is a “big, old show” that is filled with “lots of great music, and will be lots of fun for the whole family.”

The youth theater presents “Wonderful Town” at 7 each night, Thursday, May 17, through Saturday, May 19, at Brewer Middle School, 5 Somerset St.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

“This is an old-fashioned-style Broadway musical, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Betty Condon and Adolph Green,” Kimball said.

“It is a great, old show that debuted in 1953 on Broadway, and is the story of two sisters from Ohio who move to New York City during the Depression.

“One is trying to make it as an actress, and one is trying to make it as a writer.”

The show is “actually based on a collection of stories called ‘My Sister Eileen’ that also was made into a movie,” he added.

The big cast includes approximately 40 Brewer High School students and Brewer Middle School pupils.

The lead characters of Ruth and Eileen are played by Erika Cote and Lexi Marceron.

Kimball added that Matt McLaughlin “plays Bob Baker, who is a magazine editor,” and that Jamie Bartol “plays Frank, the manager of the local Walgreens.”

Anthony Severance appears as newspaper reporter Chick Clark.

Elysa Woodhead “is the girls’ neighbor Helen; and Matt Adams “is her football player boyfriend, Rick.”

Linda Nickerson of Phillips-Strickland House in Bangor invites you to its annual Spring Yard Sale 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, May 18, at 21 Boyd St. in Bangor.

She said the sale will feature everything from books to furniture and miscellaneous small appliances.

She does gently stress, however, that the event begins promptly at 9 a.m., and requests “no early birds.”

Dan Cashman reports the American Cancer Society has named Jackie Blanchard and Wayne Ireland honorary co-chairmen.

Since 2001, Blanchard has had six surgeries for metastatic osteosarcoma, a bone cancer with a disease of the lungs.

Ireland, a married father of four children from age 1 to 9, was diagnosed in 2006 with esophageal cancer.

Tami Campbell reports the location for the annual Children’s Fair, hosted by the Hampden Methodist Church Jubilation Handbell Choir, has been changed due to the rescheduling of Hampden Academy SATs.

The Children’s Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 19, at Reeds Brook Middle School in Hampden.

“It is the same fair, the same time, just at a different place,” Campbell reported. The fair is usually held at Hampden Academy.

“It’s a wonderful indoor yard sale,” Campbell added, “filled with baby and children’s equipment, toys and clothing for infants to junior adults.”

Sharon Broom e-mailed that the Bar Harbor (MDI) Rotary Club is hosting its fifth annual Rotary Adventure Golf Tournament 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf in Bar Harbor.

The fee is $15 for individuals, $50 for foursomes and $100 to sponsor a hole, which includes a foursome.

More information can be obtained by calling Scott Hammond, 288-1276, or by e-mailing scott.hammond@thefirst.com.

Broom added the event features a pirate parade and costume competition; prizes for individuals and foursomes; for the best pirate costumes for adults and children, male and female; and all participants are eligible for the grand prize of a weekend in Portland and other door prizes.

All proceeds from the tournament benefit local cancer-related charities, Broom wrote.

And, she added, Pirate’s Cove “is also donating, to the club, a portion” of the proceeds earned that day after the tournament.

Race director Ray Cooke e-mailed me to let readers know Glenburn Recreation is hosting the Glenburn 5K Road Race beginning with sign-up from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Glenburn Fire Department on Lakeview Road.

The race fee is $7 for people over 18 and $4 for students under 18, and all proceeds benefit “the initiative to build and maintain an all-weather track in the town,” Cooke wrote.

If you prefer to preregister, you can do so up to Friday, June 22, by e-mailing friendsofglenburntrack@yahoo.com or calling Cooke at 949-0430.
